You would think Market Square would make a profit considering it is a tourist attraction for the city.

I don't think the individual vendors weren't making profit, I just think it was talking of the the city having a deficit in operating costs and rental money it receives from the vendors.

I worry about the Market Place becoming too Disneyfied....like the river is becoming. How about something in between. The zoos and Museums up in Chicago are run by non-profits and have been much more successful than the city at running these places. Perhaps something like this would work for the Market? Keep it Authentic. Keep it San Antonio.

Very nice view in the works here:

I like The Vistana, but I'm kind of scared of those broad vertical lines on the facade.

I like how some parts of the new river are wide. It makes it look more like a river and not a creek. I hope after it's completed, the city brings back that teal color it had a while back. Does anybody know why they haven't been using that chemical solution to make it that teal color latley. For a while, it kind of made SA look like Venice Italy.

Aloft Hotel

Does anyone know the latest on the Aloft Houston Street project? Starwood's website lists it with a Dec 2009 opening, but there is no way that will happen unless something has already started.

alamocityhotels.com list an opening of Fall 2011.
The same contractors that are working on the Neisner/Towneplace Suites

are working on the Aloft and the Hyatt Summerfield projects all on Houston St., all
set to be done in the fall of 09,10, and 2011.
The Texas building project is actually being looked at as a possible condo conversion
instead of hotel, so that could actually speed up the date of the Aloft but I wouldn't
expect any construction to begin til about this time next year.
Most of my info is coming from either a contact of mine at ACH or the architect of these projects.

is that the south texas building?

i know that it had been set aside (and pre-sold) as a condo redevelopment before being repurposed as a hotel redevelopment...

is it back to condos?

I really hope the S Texas building becomes condos instead of hotel. For the love of God. NO MORE HOTELS.

Well hopefully with the Eighteen Hundred getting final approval this past week, Pearl's CIA building starting construction soon and the completion of River North coming up in May, we should hopefully see some type of balance in announcement of projects. I expect a couple of midsize announcements by mid-year for hotels with definitely one in the works right now. Once RiverNorth gets flowing, and with some hype, I don't expect Embarcadero to be the only Museum Reach project between the Riverwalk and Pearl.
