They showed the scale model on the news and I didn't notice anything about the creek.

Community envisions Little Italy in downtown S.A.

Quote:
The plans call for developing land situated behind Columbus Hall to create a small, mixed-used development, reminiscent of a town in the Calabria region of Italy, which was once home to many of the Italian immigrant families who moved to San Antonio.

An architect's mock-up on display during Sunday's celebration showed plans for several buildings of various shapes and sizes all oriented toward the back of San Francesco di Paola Church, a 1920s structure adjacent to Columbus Hall.

The Society owns the land behind Columbus Hall where most of the development would take place, although plans for the project also envision some changes to the neighboring Columbus Park, such as adding a bus stop.

This project sounds very interesting. Glad to hear more potential development coming in the way of downtown.

Guess the building will be small enought to fit in the lot along San Saba.

I was going through some old stories of DT SA and not sure if I mentioned it before or not, but Baptist Hospital has/d preliminary plans to build an 8 story, 172,800 square-foot addtition. Haven't heard anything new on this, but I know we had discussed expansion plans before....

Normally I'd be against this sort of thing, but to be honest it's almost nothing more than a traffic median really. Madison Square park is only a block away, which actually functions as a park (especially now that it has a dog park).

The land behind the church used to be an old cloverleaf ramp to northbound IH 35 from Eastbound IH 10. So there space, not sure if TXDOT owns the land or not.

I was reading this blog on mysa and it said
Quote:
The master planning team will be led by the Los Angeles-based Johnson Fain , and will include San Antonio's Poteet Architects, Pape-Dawson Engineers, William Dupont of the University of Texas at San Antonio and the Olin Studio of Philadelphia, among others.
I looked up Johnson Fain and just wanted to note on how nice some of his projects look, so I actually have high hopes for this.

San Diego Ballpark Village

Alhambra Master Plan

Johnson Fain

Some pretty nice looking projects imo. Hopefully he can inject some of this into Hemisfair.

Linda Pace Exhibition Space

Anybody have any information on this? Renderings? I just picked up on this myself.

Linda Pace Foundation picks director-curator

Plans for a museum to house the Pace Foundation's collection of more than 500 contemporary art works have been on the drawing board for a few years.

In the red
Quote:
Famed British architect David Adjaye’s preliminary design for the collection of the late San Antonio art patron Linda Pace features cantilevered skylights above four spacious galleries. To be located on Camp Street in a spot currently occupied by an old warehouse, the building will be clad in red, the signature color for Pace, who once dreamed of an idyllic “ruby city” and named the book about her creation of Artpace’s internationally-respected artists’ residency program “Dreaming Red.”

But what promises to be one of San Antonio’s most architecturally significant buildings is now in “pause mode,” said Rick Moore, director of the Linda Pace Foundation. The economic meltdown has caused the foundation’s assets (which peaked at an estimated $75 million) to decline by a third, he said, putting the plans for the collection on hold, although he said that the foundation’s annual $1 million support of Artpace’s operating budget is assured.

Interview: Rick Moore, Director, Linda Pace Foundation
by Claire Ruud

Quote:
As for the building, Pace selected David Adjaye as the architect before her death, and his initial design includes all of four exhibition spaces. “Initial thoughts,” Moore tells us, “might be that only one of those spaces might contain a rotating selection of works from Linda’s collection. As for the other three spaces, we’re trying to figure out … what would work to create a vibrant building with these spaces.” In terms of time frame, within about a year Moore says he’s “hopeful that we will have completed the schematic design phase and moved to the design development phase so that we’ll be able to present a model to the public.” Regarding actual construction, Moore suggests that “absent further deterioration in the capital markets” (and this was pre-Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch meltdown last weekend), they might be able to break ground within a “four year window.” Acquisitions for the collection and granting activities (apart from the Foundation's ongoing relationship with Artpace) are on the back burner for now. First, finances must be sorted out, policies and procedures must be instituted and a design for the building must be agreed upon. Until then, we’ll have to hold our breath to find out what kind of a role the Linda Pace Foundation will play in the local and national art scene.
So even if the 4 year plan was optimistic, we could be hearing more of this new project soon.
As for David Adjaye, he designed the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver.

I would like to see something similar to the Alhambra Master Plan at Hemisfair.

A Linda Pace museum would be awesome, I saw that Museum back during spring break. It is pretty sweet, I would love something similar to that but with the red flare the article says it will have.

The museum should go in the river north area near SAMA and Pearl because I know the Pearl wants to build a modern art museum. That'd be a nice cluster of museums which would add to that areas urbanism. Maybe right off Broadway, that old car dealer space that was bulldozed.

From what I've heard, the art facility is actually scheduled to be placed right next to Camp Street. And the foundation has recently hired a guy from New York to come and possibly be curator (or help with getting funding, etc.) Very exciting to see this move forward...hopefully sooner, rather than later.

Hey forumers!

It seems that the Briscoe Museum on Market Street is now getting more than just a facelift. It seems that they're adding on to it which may be the reason for the delay in getting it open again. Does anybody know the new grand opening date, and what it is that they're adding on to it? More progress for San Antonio! Yes!!!

Here's a sneak peek at the new and improved Briscoe Museum on Market Street:

Located on the banks of the beautiful San Antonio River Walk, the Dolph and Janey Briscoe Western Art Museum will reside in a historic location. It is less than a ten minute stroll from the Alamo. The Main entrance and ‘’anchor’’ building was built in 1929 and was the original Main Library of San Antonio as part of the Carnegie Library System during that era. All three floors of this historic building will have galleries of art and artifacts.

Rear View:

Visitors will cross over an enclosed bridge to the newly constructed galleries and Pavilion. The newly constructed venue will complement the original main building. Building design of the facility is in the hands of the prestigious, award winning firm of Lake/Flato Architects. The top two floors of the new venue will be gallery space. The first floor Pavilion will be available for rent year around for meetings, conferences, private lunches and dinners, receptions, etc. It will have seating for 340 table guests overlooking the San Antonio River and The Museum’s Sculpture Garden. Museum visitors and Pavilion guests can easily enter both venues from the Market Street entrance or directly from the River Walk.

The Museum gratefully acknowledges the Bexar County Venue Programs Office for its generous contribution of four million dollars from the bond issue passed by voters last May. This contribution will be used for the construction and completion of the Briscoe Western Art Museum.

What's going to be built where the O'Krent's Building used to be? I saw how much better that part of town looks without that awful eyesore. Let's hope they make good use of that prime real estate on San Pedro.

At the Downtown Luncheon yesterday, DT Blog reports that David Adelman of Cross & Co. announced that they are planning for first tenants to move in by May. They also mentioned that Alteza (atop Grand Hyatt) has sold 6 units, is pending on 6 and 4 are in negotiations.

On the agenda for City Council today, this report states that the Performing Arts Center will break ground in June 2011, and open in Sept 2013.

The facade work appears to be complete on the Kress building; I make that assumption based on the fact that the facade cover was removed. It looks good and Texas de Brazil seems to be on track for that December opening. Now if we could just get some apartments on those upper floors.

I'll be making some visual updates soon.
