What I found on the SBC Building (Whitacre Tower) and Texas Theatre:

SBC BUILDING, 1984

Architect: Ford, Powell & Carson and Fisher & Spillman
This is the site of one of San Antonio's better known preservation struggles. A Dallas bank, now long gone, acquired the entire block for a three-building high-rise complex. The Hertzberg Building, an architectual balance to the Gunter, across the street, was demolished, as was a good back building and the Texas Theatre. The Conservation Society weighed in, retaining Michael Graves to design a scheme with the same square footage of office space while retaining the Texas Theatre. The bank won.

If the residential boom really takes off in downtown San Antonio and brings in thousands of new residents to downtown, don't be surprised then if you start getting more proposals for office buildings since companies will be interested in having their offices so close by to their potential workers. Even so, most of those office buildings will probably be small to start. That's what's happened in Austin. Google to space in an existing building, Facebook has come here. And Cirrus Logic, which moved to Austin in 2007 from California, is now building their headquarters in downtown, moving from their suburban office building in Southwest Austin.

I think you'll see that in San Antonio too. And I think down the road there will be larger office buildings planned by developers once demand for space in downtown goes up and up.

I think that's correct. As I see it, one of the things hampering office development in downtown SA is that its so decentralized from the skilled workers in the area (which SA has a short supply of to begin with). Get more of those to move downtown, balance out North Side development with development on the South Side, which could entice those who still want to live in the suburbs but want a cheaper alternative to up North, and downtown will start to get all sorts of development. Double an area's commutershed and anything can happen.

The third and largest building was never built. It would have been over thirty stories. The bank was either bought out or folded. I don't remember which.

But hey, we got an Embassy Suites instead.

I disagree with this statement. San Antonio is not the blue collar town people think it is.

You didn't; you said San Antonio has a short supply of skilled workers. What I, and I guess most people, associate with skilled workers are professionals and office workers....basically white collar folks. And I am aware there are skilled blue collar folks, but they are generally not considered when most think of skilled workers - certainly not in the context of occupying downtown office space. Maybe I am wrong to equate your statement to the generalization of San Antonio's work force consisting mainly of manual laborers, hospitality workers and cooks. If this is not what you meant, it's the way it came across.

Going by this graphic, I would say somewhere around 260 to 270 feet tall. The Drury Plaza Hotel is 278 feet to the roof and 341 feet to the top of the mast.

Yeah I was looking at that picture too and was thinking somewhere around 270. I was hoping it would be around 280 like the Drury, but it does look a tad bit shorter.
