I mean some of the companies occupying these buildings are US companies and I doubt the developers have more money to throw around than in SF.
Ultimately SF is 870k people and only ~150 years old. It just needs more time and money to develop like London. Any future developments in the 2020s that are SF Tower sized are going to have to compete visually with Oceanwide, SF Tower, 181 Fremont, Park Tower, etc. Oceanwide is in my estimation the equivalent high quality of the shard.

^^So now we know why the bathtub shape of the excavation bottom. This thing, ominously like the Millennium Tower, is going to have a massively thick fundation pad and that's the shape of its bottom so that the center, probably under the concrete core, will be thicker than the edges which may bear less weight.

The previous page says it's on bedrock though.

Except there's probably nothing ominous about it, because they presumably aren't going to screw up the project like the millennium people did with theirs (they put an extra heavy reinforced concrete building on a foundation type that's used for lighter steel frame buildings).

Also, it's built directly over bedrock instead of deep landfill, which is nice. Not that a mat foundation is a bad choice for landfill (tons of existing towers in SF have that kind of foundation), as long as the building isn't too heavy for it.

I'm sure they will be taking extra precautions with the foundation work here.
I do like the design and think its a nice add to the city.

Some people here have a great deal of trouble telling when someone's injecting a bit of ironic humor.

Nevertheless, it has been contended here several times now that these Folsom buildings lie over bedrock that is "a lot" closer to the surface than in the case of the Millennium Tower or, in this case that the buiding lies "directly over it". You must be privy to information the rest of us doesn't have--the depth of soil covering the bedrock in this exact location--and you should share it with us. I understand the assumption that because it's at the foot of a rock hill (Rincon Hill) that the upward slope of the bedrock is consistent and gradual from Mission to the hill itself, but that's really a lot of speculation.

My tendency has always been to assume the architects and engineers know what they are doing and that was only somewhat shaken by the whole "Millenium Tower" thing. But before we found out how badly they did scr*w up, who would have believed that could happen in modern SF with all the bureaucracy that checks and double checks designs and such.

So I await the facts. How deep is the bedrock under this building and how heavy will it be in comparison to others like the Millennium and 181 Fremont (one with piles to bedrock, one without). . . or are you too just depending on the architects and engineers not to screw up again as I will be doing (with fingers crossed).

I don't know. In my line of work I've seen too much of the "professional" ego in its native environment. Just because a colleague screwed up, it's hard to accept that you, yourself, possibly ever could.

But I trust everything with the design of this building is fine. I just am admitting, unkike some others, that I have no basis to know that or reason to trust this particular developer and his design group whom I know nothing about. But I WAS KIDDING IN THE MILLENIUM REFERENCE. IT WAS A LITTLE BIT OF DARK HUMOR.

A very deep hole--you can catch only glimpses of the bottom of it from outside the perimeter fence. But the excavation seems complete:

By me.

Look hard--there's the stump of a (white) crane down in that hole:

Taken today by me.

It may well be more than a crane. They must have poured at least the anchoring foundation of the crane. But they may have poured much more. The trouble is the hole is so deep and the perimeter fencing is so tall and keeps you so far back from the edge you can't look down into the hole to see what's going on there.

^^Do you put your camera on a pole or something? Anyway, good job. So they are pouring the foundation and it is fair to say this is "under construction".

Good eye - Webcor just tweeted about it.
