How can they build the arena downtown Edmonton for 600 million, then come along and want to build one less then a third of the size in Fort mac, and it costs the same?

The Fort McMurray Arena included the operational Costs for 40 years. The Contruction cost was approx 150 million. I believe nobody here understood that either, they should have never talked about the total cost, only the cost to build it.

The arena is an idiotic idea.

The riverfront revitalization plan should have taken priority, THAT was money that would have been well spent and would have fixed many of the issues in the core of FM.

I hate to break it to you folks living in Fort Mac but your city is probably going to be a ghost town in the next 20 years or so unless you can diversify your economy because the need for fossil fuels is dying as we shift to electric vehicles. For that reason putting money into big capital projects is for the most part, a waste of money.

We're shifting to electric vehicles? I must have missed the memo on that.

Well, considering gas won out in the early 1900s even after electric had a head start... I don't see Electric as the predominant choice. I do see more efficient cars with greater carbon capture and storage on the Upgrading and Refining end.

Ever heard of the Chevy Volt? Fisker? Toyota Prius? Tesla? Any of these names ring a bell? Not to mention all the charging stations that are popping up all over the place. It's pretty obvious to me that we're moving from gas to electric but I guess you guys have your heads in the tar sand.

Have you ever heard of market share? Even with the huge increase in options, range and quality in the marketplace, all types of electric/hybrid vehicles sales have been flat since 2007. We are just starting to ween ourselves off coal, there is at least 30 years before oil starts to lose its luster!

^So you agree with me, we're just differing slightly on the numbers.

We weren't stopping anyone from posting about development, what's more, all future development in Fort Mac is contingent upon what we're discussing so it seems pretty pertinent to me.

Wow the arena looks pretty damn nice! Good job Fort Mac! Hopefully this goes through. Keep some of the skilled workers working in the city while oil recovers.

I love the idea of shifting to electric cars. Here in BC the provincial government has been spending tax payer money installing charging stations everywhere for such things.

We are shifting to electric vehicles in regions of the world where carbon taxes are high on gas vehicles making it cheaper to own electric (basically some isolated pockets of Scandinavia) or in places dominated by movie stars and others with deep pockets (e.g. Hollywood).

For the rest of the world it is a niche that is going to gain very slowly. Once oil starts to become rare driving up the price we see the rest of the world switch.

A lot of my coworkers are homeless tonight. Brian Jean, Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Wildrose Party lost his home tonight as well.

Really sad day today.
