hkskyline's 2019 in Surabaya, Indonesia

Surabaya is often overlooked by tourists who fly in and venture out to historic Malang or spectacular Bromo. Alternatively, they may base themselves here, which has a large selection of hotels, while day tripping out of town. There are some interesting sights for a full day of exploration, and the plenty of Grab cars to help you get around this city in an enjoyable way.

Hotel Majapahit was built in 1910 to be a landmark hotel. Beautiful colonial architecture set amongst gardens and courtyards, this is a great oasis from the city's hustle and bustle. The builders also developed other luxury hotels across Southeast Asia, including the Raffles Hotel in Singapore and the Strand in Burma.

Pasar Ikan Pabean is a chaotic, wet, and messy local wet market that spills over into neighbouring side streets.

Mesjid Ampel is the city's oldest and most sacred mosque, and the surrounding alleys are a bustling market. Sunan Ampel lived in the 15th century and was one of 9 saints credited with bringing Islam to Java.

The Majapahit has that colonial elegance but at a fraction of the price for similar hotels in Asia. It is well under USD $100 a night!
