Great news. This should make the multi-use facility a shoe in.

It's an international athletic event that was created by the Olympics for all of the sports that don't compete in the Olympics (like softball). Around 4,500 athletes, a few hundred thousand spectators, and an economic impact in the way of a few hundred million dollars. Our bid beat our Lima and Ufa, Russia.

We do. That's kind of the reason for posting that we won the games.

Nice! I've never heard of them, but they sound like a nice get for the city. Go Ham!

This very well could be the big kick Birmingham has been looking for, granted smaller doings have had a bigger impact to get Birmingham going the last decade than anything else. A huge win for the city and region!

Thank you for comment and I think you are so right. As soon as the winning of this event sets in on the many nay-sayers in and around the city and the metro area, hopefully most of them will embrace it whole heartedly and make it as successful as it can be.

not a new project, but the design has changed a little:

A sneak peek at Lakeview's Metropolitan apartment project

I like the 7/29 project down in Lakeview, this new project will be even more impressive. I wish we could put a project like 7/29 down at the corner of 19th Street S between 10th and 11th Avenue South in 5 points.

Do you think our airport can handle that much traffic for the world games?

Good question. I am sure the airlines will have an idea what to expect when their bookings start to rise around that time. Hopefully they will put extra planes on the routes from the major national and international hubs that have flights directly to Birmingham and time them so as not to overrun BHM. I am sure if you ask someone at BHM, they will be positive and say "yes sure no problem".

It really depends on how many spectators will come from other countries. Seeing as these games will be held in the US, people may feel more secure traveling to see them than they would had they been held in say Russia.

I really don't think there will be an issue, though. I'm sure the airport took into consideration future air traffic growth when they rebuilt the airport, so airlines should have no problem adding flights if they notice others getting booked up. A lot of people already fly in and out of Atlanta for international flights because it's so much cheaper (my friend's flight from Paris to Atlanta in December was tremendously cheaper than Paris > Atlanta > Birmingham), so the real issue might be getting the international visitors to town.

first I've heard of this one:

Cain Furniture building renovation could begin this spring

could be a nice little project... article says 25 lofts. here's what's there currently:

safe to say just about anything will be an improvement. also glad to see development spreading further west. this is close to mcwane / pizitz (that's the phoenix building on the left).

Originally brought up by TimCity in the Southeast forum, here's a graphic detailing the status of several projects that benefited from the state's new historic redevelopment tax credit program.

Excellent piece from AL.com on the Florentine Building.

Historic Florentine building in downtown Birmingham reopens as event venue

..........

The Florentine Building, at Second Avenue North and Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard, first opened in 1926 and has always been an events center. It sat empty for about six and a half years until Corretti Catering, run by Ken Effinger and Rebecca Corretti, bought it and remodeled it.

Friday night they showed off the newly renovated ballroom and the first-floor café at an event attended by hundreds, including local leaders.

..........

The restored venue will generate 45 new jobs and house wedding receptions and corporate events, officials said. It will also add more lights and foot traffic to a growing area of entertainment in Birmingham's city center, said David Fleming, the president and CEO of REV Birmingham.

The renovation preserved the original elements of the building, which was designed by architect Henry Upton Sims to mimic Italian architecture. It was originally planned to be a 10-floor building, but only two were built.

..........

The restoration was helped by Alabama's Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits, supported by former state Rep. Paul DeMarco. It was one of 12 projects underway in Birmingham's city center using the tax credit.

..........

Now, the building is home to the pair's catering business, Corretti Catering. The business moved from its former building, the Carraway-Davie House in Liberty Park, selling that building to Cahaba Park Church.

..........

"There's a lot happening downtown," Effinger said, "and it's a great place to be."

Thomas Jefferson Building

http://www.bizjournals.com/birmingha...jefferson.html

i wouldn't mind seeing the developers remodel the exterior as well. do something different then what the other historical buildings developers seems to be doing and just remodeling the interior. a more 21st century type of building would be nice to go along with all the other skyscrapers downtown. plus with railroad park, region field, intermodal facility, powell steam plant development, pedestrian bridge connecting the park to the new facility, much of that area will have that brand new type of feel to it. so hopefully they remodel the outside as well.

It's good to see this (Thomas Jefferson Tower) finally moving forward. I think it will be red brick with beige stone? It should look great, when the white paint is removed from the exterior.
