The Bangladesh you didn't know!

Bangladesh is often talked about in the media for corruption and floods- but what most people do not know is that we are a lush green and beautiful country which was been consistently growing at a good pace for many years- and most Bangladeshis- including me, have never seen a flood in their lives! Thinking all Bangladeshis live in floods is like thinking all Canadians live in igloos

On this thread I will post about the good sides of my country and our culture- Beautiful Bangladesh.

The political, cultural and economic capital of Bangladesh- 9th most populous city in the world- beloved Dhaka.

Rickshaws are a very popular form of transport all over Bangladesh. The works of art behind every rickshaw (most of them hand-painted) has become a part of Bengali culture.

Faith, can you define? IV by Ata pata, on Flickr

The vast majority of the Bangladeshi people are Muslims. The faith has mixed with the traditional forms of Bengali heritage to form an unique culture.

When faith calls. by Ata pata, on Flickr

Although over 90% of our population are followers of the Islamic faith, the region of Bengal has traditionally been a hub of tolerance (there are the handful of stray incidents, but very low), with Muslims and Hindus living as brothers united by the love for Bangladesh.

What is Bangladesh without her music? And what is Bangladeshi music without our traditional drums- the "Dhol"

Lalbagh Fort- an incomplete Mughal stronghold-the site was being built with great splendour until the the daughter of a Mughal General and uncle of the then emperor, Pari Bibi (Fairy Lady)- considered to be one of the most beautiful women of her times and wife of the prince, died here- superstition led the Mughals to believe the site would be unfavourable to build a palace.

The site also witnessed the violent revolt against the British invaders, all those who rebelled were hanged to death at Victoria Park. After the British left in 1947, Victoria Park was renamed "Bahadur Shah Park" after the last great Mughal emperor. Over a hundred years after their deaths, those hung in shame stand victorious in the free soil of Bengal.

Sundarbans- largest mangrove rainforest in the world- home of the Royal Bengal Tiger.

The name itself means "Sundar"=beautiful & "Bans"=jungle (Beautiful Jungle), yet beautiful as it is- apart from the lush rich wildlife of monkeys and deer, crocodiles lark in the water and the land is the home of one of the fierciest hunters in the world- our national animal- the Bengal Tiger.

In the photograph below, notice the cloth tied to the branch- it is similar to a "X marks the spot"- as in someone was killed by a tiger here- it is not just a memorial but also a warning sign that you are treading in Royal Bengal Tiger's territory.

However, the area is extremely safe for tourists as the tourism authority provides armed guards to every group.
