IGA became Sobies. There might be a few independent IGAs kicking around.

Usually Sobey's. We have a Sobey's and a Safeway near our house and the Sobey's is a far superior store. We buy a few things at Costco. When we lived downtown we did as much shopping as we could at Fredette's.

Expensive all right. I've got a buddy who works at Co-Op. He shops at Superstore.

Safeway and Stupidstore. The prices are the same at both, but the vegetables aren't.

Do not buy vegetables from Stupidstore.

There's loyalty for ya! I guess loyalty is a pretty outdated concept anyway... and it does interfere with efficiency. Come to think of it, so do kindenss and compassion and all those other silly human foibles, which don't fit into economic models and deter free trade. Fortunately, we'll soon be rid of the lot of them

Buddy is just trying to do the best he can for his family with the limited resources he has (he works at Co-op after all). I don't see why we need to pass judgement on the guy.

ok I just found out the IGA belongs to Sobeys (I think) and Extra Food to Superstore (I'm pretty sure).

Sobeys is probably the best for quality, but it's pretty expensive. Safeway has good produce and meat, but the way is run I don't like it, i.e. why do they leave open boxes of cherries in the counters (and cherries everywhere)??? That's disgusting.
Superstore has the best and bigger choice. Price Chopper is cheap but it's quite low quality.

If I had a car I'd go to only to Superstore, but for now I'm stuck with Safeway.

P.s.: I also find disgusting the fact that there are (apparently anywhere) no gloves provided to pick produce... God knows which hands had touched it!
And also the way the deli products are handled... grrrrr. They should learn to respect food way more.

"why do they leave open boxes of cherries in the counters (and cherries everywhere)??? That's disgusting."

Ambiance.

I have no idea what you're talking about. I find the placement of the toilet paper and tampons (Same aisle as cookies ) and the butter being in an aisle instead of on the edge (stupidest idea ever!) to be bigger drawbacks than random cherries floating about the store.

"I also find disgusting the fact that there are (apparently anywhere) no gloves provided to pick produce... God knows which hands had touched it!"

Wash them? That's what you're supposed to do. You can use soap if you want.

"And also the way the deli products are handled... grrrrr. They should learn to respect food way more."

Yes, the deli is absolutely filthy. Covered in a layer of grease and always has overflowing garbage. That was my least favourite part of the job. (Although throwing the bags of garbage into the chute was a ton of fun, especially with the milk, which has to be frozen before being thrown out - the little yoghourts explode when they hit the sides! I got in trouble for that once. )

Also bad is Renco Foods. Aside from the violations listed in the CFIA notice, their produce and service is shitty. Easily the worst place to buy groceries between St John's and Vancouver.

Where do you think that produce comes from in the first place? All the dirty hands can't be worse than the dirt it comes from in the first place, not to mention the trip it takes from wherever it originated to your local grocery store!

I've never had a problem with delis.

I never thought about people touching produce with flithy hands.

I myself don't even eat chips if someone put their hand in the bag.

I try and buy from the local grocery stores (Metro Meats, California Fruit) as much as possible, but alot of our household groceries are bought at the Safeway on Main and Polson. I also enjoy shopping at the Forks Market because it's a much more pleasent, humane experience than the average big box superstore. Plus it's nice shopping there because I can buy wine from Fenton's instead of from the government.

The Real Canadian Superstore for big shops, Food Fare on Maryland & Westminster for the smaller ones. Portage Meats for all deli products.

Adding 'Real Canadian' to the title doesn't hide the fact that it sucks.

They won't even let me take my backpack in there. So, I pretty much have to use a car to shop there.
