https://www.census.gov/programs-surv...data-sets.html

Also I don't recall Twin Falls being classified as a "metro" previous to these listings. Unless I'm mistaken, it appears they have just been upgraded from a "micro" to "metro" area. The 2017 table does not list Twin Falls which appears to confirm this.

Other interesting info: Idaho's population is now at 1,754,208. If present trends continue, Idaho will surpass West Virginia (currently 1,805,832 and falling) in total population by 2020 and is quickly approaching Nebraska and New Mexico. All three of the those states have 5 electoral votes in the Electoral College and three congressional districts. They may simply drop WV's elector and give it to a different state (such as TX) but it's clear that Idaho is quickly approaching the population required to receive an additional congressional district and elector.

Just checked on the Spokane metro too, so looks like consolidated CDA-Spokane (Kootenai and Spokane counties respectively) stand at 734,998. Wonder where they're at as of now.

Edit: I see Jimthemanincda already had updated his sig to show that. I think that puts the area at give or take 150,000 more people than when I left to move to Seattle. Fun to see it grow.

Sorry that I forgot to mention this. Twin Falls was designated as a metro area by the US Census Bureau in the fall of 2017.

Thanks for sharing the article jim.

I'm surprised the city manager for Twin Falls doesn't understand that a metro area is not only based on the central city reaching a population of 50,000 but also the designated urbanized area reaching a population threshold of 100,000 (in this case Twin Falls and Jerome counties). Per census.gov:

"Metropolitan Statistical Areas
An MSA consists of one or more counties that contain a city of 50,000 or more inhabitants, or contain a Census Bureau-defined urbanized area (UA) and have a total population of at least 100,000 (75,000 in New England). Counties containing the principal concentration of population—the largest city and surrounding densely settled area—are components of the MSA."

I think Caldwell will jump to #4 here in the next couple+ years. Crazy that Twin is over 50k. CdA should jump Poky in a bit, too.

The Census Bureau finalized state population estimates for 2020 on December 22nd. Idaho's population was estimated to be 1,826,913 as of April 1, 2020.

https://www.census.gov/programs-surv...estimates.html

Over the past year, Idaho's population surpassed that of West Virginia. Idaho is now the 38th most populous state. Last year, Idaho's population was estimated to be 1,789,060 vs. 1,795,263 for West Virginia. West Virginia's population actually decreased this year to 1,784,787.

The next state on the list is Nebraska, with 1,937,552 residents in 2020. Taking the current 2019-2020 growth rates for each state, Idaho could pass Nebraska in 2024. Then, in 2025, Idaho could hit a population of over 2,000,000.

Between 2010-2020, Idaho was the third fastest-growing state, at 16.5%. Only Texas (16.8%) and Utah (17.6%) grew faster.

Even with all of the growth, every article I have read projects that Idaho will not again another U.S. House of Representatives seat when reapportionment happens. We must be darn close though...

That's ridiculous. West Virginia has 3 and Idaho has 2. Why wouldn't they reapportion this time around? Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Idaho's growth was more than projected due to the pandemic.

They will reapportion and West Virginia will lose a representative; we just won't gain one. We added 250,000 people, but Texas added 4 mil, Florida 3 mil, and California 2 mil. Those and others with more people added will get the representatives that WV and other lose.

Ah that makes sense. I guess its apportioned nationally as a percentage of the whole?

The short answer is yes. It's a little more complicated because every state is guaranteed 1 representative and the total is fixed at 435. I had to look it up, and a formula is used that creates a priority list for apportioning representatives 51-435.

With the official 2020 Census Apportionment Results recently being delivered to President Biden, it looks like Idaho was the 2nd fastest growing state between 2010-2020 by %, growing by 17.3%. Utah was higher, growing by a rate of 18.4%, and Texas was behind Idaho, increasing population by 15.9%.

https://www2.census.gov/programs-sur...020-tableE.pdf

Idaho resident population as of 4/1/2020: 1,839,106
Idaho resident population as of 4/1/2010: 1,567,582
growth of 271,524 (17.32%)

https://www2.census.gov/programs-sur...020-tableE.pdf

Looking at how U.S. House of Representative seats are apportioned, it looks like Idaho was 8th in line (behind the states of Texas, which will gain 2 new seats, and Colorado, Florida, Montana, North Carolina, and Oregon, which will each gain 1 new seat). Maybe we'll gain a seat after the 2030 Census...

Thanks for the update.

It would be interesting to see numbers on the growth for 2020 and into this year since Boise and Idaho are growing swiftly from covid transplants including millennials moving from the Bay Area, Portland and Seattle to Boise. We all know the Boise housing market is one of the hottest in the nation and will probably continue to be so for years to come.

COMPASS is estimating that Ada and Canyon Counties grew by nearly 24,000 people in 2020 which puts the two county total near 762,000 and does not include the other counties in the Boise Metro.

In 2019 the Boise CSA which stretches from Mountain Home to Ontario, Oregon was around 812,000. The big question is when will the CSA hit one million.

Looks like Idaho's northern metro is going to keep growing at a decent clip too. Top emerging markets: CDA, Austin, Billings, and Spokane.
