Does anyone know how many new BART cars are in service now? I don't commute on BART everyday (I work terrible hours) but I ride it several times a week, and I've already snagged a few rides on the new trains. They seem to now pretty consistently be found just outside of the peak times (10 a.m.-ish and 3 p.m.-ish) on weekdays on everything but the Richmond-Fremont line.

The huge village that’s being proposed in north San Jose would contain one million square feet of offices, 2,000 homes, 320,000 square feet of retail, a movie complex, an amphitheater and a 150-room hotel, according to preliminary plans submitted by developer SiliconSage Builders.

“This is going to be a mega village,” said Sanjeev Acharya, chief executive officer with Sunnyvale-based SiliconSage Builders. “The idea is to create a place where people can come and spend half a day.”

The project is somewhat scaled back in size from the original plans for a 31-acre project with 3,000 homes and 500,000 square feet of retail. With fewer homes and less retail on less acreage, the development will be more compact. That, in turn will give it more of an urban village look and feel.

Potentially 5,000 people could work in the development’s office buildings, once they were all built.

“We also want to include a movie theater and an outdoor amphitheater,” Acharya said.

Just a thought-- maybe a thousand less housing units & more offices might be a better build out here since we still need to improve our J/ER ratio.

City approves huge apartment project near San Leandro BART station

Quote:
A site near the San Leandro BART station once used to store construction equipment will be transformed into an apartment complex with 687 units — one of the city’s largest.

The redevelopment site at 915 Antonio St. is just south of San Leandro Creek and about 1,000 feet from the San Leandro BART station.

One building will be six stories tall while the second will be five stories. A total of 892 parking spaces will be provided.

The buildings will have a mix of studios and one-, two- and three-bedroom units.

Each apartment will have a full kitchen, plus a washer and dryer. About 30 percent of the units will include private balconies.

The project is expected to generate 2,010 jobs during construction and $2.9 million annually in tax revenue for the city, according to San Leandro officials.

Along with the San Leandro project, Maximus Real Estate Partners is behind a proposed 330-unit apartment complex at 1979 Mission St., San Francisco. Dubbed the “Monster in the Mission” by opponents, the project is near the 16th Street BART station and has been in the works more than six years.

a few from along the Caltrain line...

in SSF, scaffolding starting to come down on Cadence...

... and now that the site's floodwaters have receded (or been pumped out), work might go a little faster at 150 Airport Blvd (foreground)

scaffolding also coming down at Hayward Park's Station Park Green

a peek into some of the earlier phases and the interior, still in progress. this one seems to be taking a long time

just south of Hayward Park, the berm for the raised track is pretty much in place from its northern end...

to the first overpass at the county fairgrounds

between that overcrossing and the next one to the south, we have one edge

here is the southernmost future overpass (with a glimpse of the expanded section of Hillsdale Mall in the background)

and, a couple stops further south, San Carlos

Station Park Green (Hayward Park) much more visible now. not very exciting looking, but nice to have the housing near transit. now just need to get the lot in the foreground going

less scaffolding also at San Carlos

the prominent new building at Jefferson and Broadway in Redwood City is coming along quickly. I think it looks good and is very appropriate scale for the center of a medium-sized city

just a random shot of other recent developments in the area

Personally, I don't think this is needed and will not be a good ROI for BART or the city of Fremont. They already have 2 locations and I don't think it will alleviate any congestion in the surrounding area.

Not to bash on the people and businesses in the surrounding area, but how many people in the Bay Area would really come to the Irvington district to visit?

Yeah, it's not much of an area to shop or visit. Suburbia. And honestly, the funds for this could be used in a much better way, especially for the crumbling BART infrastructure and confidence.

I guess it's at least nice that there will be the option to build an infill station there. It's a shame that it would virtually impossible to build infill stations at 30th and Mission and 27th Street in Oakland – two infill stations that would otherwise make a lot of sense.

Does Fremont really need three BART stations? Does Dublin really need two??

That sea of new construction apartments is soul crushing hideous. They didn't even try to make it look like a neighborhood, it's more like a bee hive. How morbid.

The mega Santa Clara Village is reducing their maximum height from 600ft to less than 400ft

Quote:
Among the striking changes, after nearly a year of community meetings: a 30 percent reduction in the maximum heights of the project. Plus, the entire development will be much more pedestrian-friendly than originally envisioned, and the project will be better connected to the nearby Patrick Henry neighborhood in Santa Clara.

The original proposal included a 600-foot-tall office tower that would have sent a spire 45 to 50 stories above the Santa Clara lowlands nearby.

The new proposal caps the height at less than 400 feet, Gerson said. In a typical office configuration, that might lead to an office tower of 25 to 30 stories. One office tower and one residential tower would reach that maximum height of under 400 feet, she added.

“We want this to be a place that is lively and accessible to everybody,” Gerson said. “It is sustainable by design. We want Santa Clara residents to come here and enjoy this.”

The development will contain 3.65 million square feet of offices, 6,000 residential units, 400,000 square feet of retail, a 300-unit hotel and eight acres of open spaces.

“The majority will be rental apartments, because we want a long-term investment and partnership with the community,” Gerson said. “The exact mix will be determined at a later date.”

Kylli has determined that 15 percent, or 900, of the housing units will be offered at affordable rates.

The development also will have more entry points than the original plan, part of a quest to make the project more connected to adjacent areas.

Kylli also will build a public school within the development.

the other changes mentioned - more pedestrian-friendly, better connections with surroundings - I find much more important than an arbitrary max height number. sounds like this is moving in the right direction.
