Robert Sweeney's meticulous sketches of Winnipeg's streets and buildings reveal the city's charms

By: Alison Mayes

Posted: 08/11/2011 1:00 AM

"You won't find Robert Sweeney penning irate letters to the editor or organizing protests to save heritage buildings.

"I'm not an activist," the St. James resident says. "I pretty much stick to myself."

But in his own introverted way, Sweeney, 58, is encouraging Winnipeggers to appreciate their unique surroundings. For more than 30 years, the artist and designer has been making meticulously detailed sketches of local buildings, bridges, parks, rivers and street scenes.

"I've always been fascinated with streetscapes and the urban landscape," he says. "It's become a passion to document all aspects of the city."

Sweeney has two upcoming book-signing appearances to promote Portraits of Winnipeg: The River City in Pen and Ink, a slim hardcover collection of nearly 50 of his precise sketches, recently published by Winnipeg's Turnstone Press.

He'll be at McNally Robinson Booksellers Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m., and at Chapters in St. Vital Centre on Aug. 20 from 1 to 4 p.m."

that's really neat!

good find. surprised to see Calgary in 15th.

This year, economically is a big one for Winnipeg, specifically how this article outlines it...people won't realize it till next year. I heard some chatter about this in February but paid little heed to it. Next year, there will be articles on how 2011 was one to remember for the city... not much we can see in front of us yet, in relation to Edmonton or Calgary or even Regina... or things such as Jets return, but I mean on an economic level... in true (recent) Winnipeg fashion, things pick up pace and stay at that like a nice brisk run. We're at the maintaining walk-jog transition right now.

Looks like the vacant PizzaHut bldg downtown will finally be filled with something. I've noticed colored lighting on the outside randomly through the week. Then this morning I noticed the signage said "Dhoom restaurant lounge opening soon". Looks like a tandori chicken/pizza place.

First Nation threatens to block Shoal Lake from Lake of the Woods
Cites concerns over Winnipeg's plan for water
By: Bartley Kives

One of the First Nations living along the source of Winnipeg’s drinking water may choke off a channel connecting Lake of the Woods to Shoal Lake if various levels of government don’t listen to its concerns about a city plan to pipe water to neighbouring municipalities.
In July, the Winnipeg and Manitoba agreed to split the cost of extending water and sewer pipes to the R.M. of Rosser, a prerequisite for the development of the CentrePort transportation hub on Winnipeg's northwest fringes. The city also hopes to sell water and sewage-treatment services north to the R.M. of West St. Paul.
One of two Ontario First Nations located along Shoal Lake, which straddles the Manitoba-Ontario border,

^ No kidding 1ajs! Maybe the govt.s of MB and Canada should choke off the roads leading into and out of certain First Nation reserves who threaten this kind of terrorism!

First Nations in Northwestern Ontario use blockades all the time. Because the government seldom communicates with them, blockades that cause major inconveniences for citizens is usually the only way to bring them to the table here. A few First Nation leaders have been jailed for it, most notable the entire council of Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug a few years ago, protesting mining activity on their traditional land.

The standoff in Caledonia has been going on for a few years, and Ontario is the only province to have killed an aboriginal protester during the 20th century. Don't worry about blockading the roads leading into their reserves, either. Many already do.

Threats of blockades; counter-threats of seiges. If one didn't know any better, they'd think we were discussing medieval warfare strategies...

insanity.......if thats the game that they are going to play cut off any government funding to the area. Funny how they plan to cut off water (sort of) to Winnipeg and ultimately 40,000+ people from their own community. If i was an aboriginal living in Winnipeg i would be angrier at this particular reserve then any other community in the city.

Let alone the "unreported pollution" that goes into Shoal Lake already. Thank God for the new Water Treatment Plant.

If they want to play hardball, then so be it. The next move is theirs.

Makerspace gives new enterprises a hand up

By: Martin Cash
Posted: 10/8/2011 1:00 AM

The floors are bare concrete in the third-storey space of a nondescript Adelaide Street warehouse building in the west Exchange District.
Over the last few months, three Winnipeg entrepreneurs and about 30 volunteers have built several rudimentary rooms with chipboard walls, hired an electrician to wire the place and hauled in about $250,000 worth of manufacturing equipment.

Welcome to Winnipeg's first makerspace, called AssentWorks.
It's the brainchild of Michael Legary, the 31-year-old owner of Seccuris, a successful information technology security company.
Over the last year, he recruited Kerry Stevenson, former chief technology officer of Great-West Life, and David Bernhardt, an industrial designer, to be fellow directors.

'Maker space' for emerging businesses launched

AssentWorks offers 'rapid prototyping' facility for entrepreneurs to make new products

By Mychaylo Prystupa, CBC News

Posted: Oct 27, 2011 8:51 PM CT

The third floor of a once-abandoned Exchange District warehouse on Winnipeg's Adelaide Street was transformed for the launch Thursday of AssentWorks, a so-called "maker space" for entrepreneurs to make stuff with high-tech tools.
The non-profit's director, Kerry Stevenson, said the space helps people overcome the high costs of making prototypes alone.
"You have an idea, you have a prototype you have to make to get investors to give you money, and [you say], 'Gosh, it's going to cost $79,000 to get that done,' and basically you're dead in the water," Stevenson said.

Looks to me like a poignant, well placed insult. Someone should send this to Sellinger.

Pretty sure it's not. Manitoba is not part of that Western Canada Trade Pact involving the other three western provinces (whatever it's called). We are not part of the "New West" because as I understand it, the provincial socialists in charge turned them down when asked to be part of the negociations. An invite into becoming part of a very strong economic trade zone and the provincial gov't throws it away. Yay socialists.

I understand your frustration with this West Can Trade Pact Joshy but the t-shirt is just depicting B.C and Alberta. It states it above the logo.
