Kaohsiung Pop Music Center

Kaohsiung Pop Music Center

official website: http://www.kpop.com.tw

Origin of the Competition

The Marine Culture and Pop Music Center is an integral part of the major public investment and construction plan by the Kaohsiung City Government. A major investment toward the overall development of Kaohsiung and even the whole of Southern Taiwan, it is one of the “i-Taiwan 12 Infrastructure Projects” as well as the “International Art and Pop Music Center” under Executive Yuan’s “New Ten Construction Projects”, which has a budget of NT$500 billion over five years. Through the building of an international art and cultural performance venue and a marine culture center, the aim is to establish Kaohsiung as a fulcrum for Asia-Pacific pop music production and performance and an international exchange platform for marine culture.

Design Objective

The central and direct goal of the Project is to create a Marine Culture and Pop Music Center that highlights the unique character of Kaohsiung City while satisfying the needs of the local people, the industries and future trends. This is to be achieved by basing its design and planning on the cultural assets of Kaohsiung, the strengths and conditions of the Project site and the characteristics of the pop music and marine culture industries. The pop music component of the Project, to be equipped world-class hardware, will help foster music professionals in Southern Taiwan, provide a leaven for pop music and its related industries and create a Southern Taiwan incubator for pop music.

Design Requirements

(1) Outdoor performance area
(2) Large performance hall
(3) Small performance halls
(4) Pop music exhibit area
(5) Pop music industry (incubation) center
(6) Marine culture exhibit center
(7) Music and marine culture commercial area
(8) Harbor wharf and passenger service center
(9) Integrated environment planning

Expected Benefits

The Project site is located between Berths 11-15 of the Port of Kaohsiung at a total area of approximately 11.89 Hectares. With waterfront access, it is in a strategic position to link the Port of Kaohsiung with the rest of the world, act as a symbolic gateway for the nation, galvanize the surrounding space and activate local industries. Functionally, it is conceived as a world-class music performance venue with a program encompassing a large performance hall, small “incubator” performance halls, a home for the pop music industry and communities and marine culture exhibit space. The establishment of a pop music center will provide Southern Taiwan with enhanced venues and facilities for diversified local and international pop music performances. Becoming part of the Asian pop music network, this Southern Taiwan incubation center for pop music talents and industry will also promote the overall growth of the pop music industry in Taiwan.

A. Comments

■ All the works are outstanding. The completed architecture promises to be the best-known landmark in Kaohsiung, and to promote the local tourism industry.

■ Jurors come from different cultural and national backgrounds. In the panel are architecture designers and musical professions. Understandably, this panel of multinational and diverse jury has selected five designs from different countries and cultures. This is an international competition under the discerning eyes of international jury.

■ World-class architecture teams endorse this international competition. We all agree that the five selected works represent the best solutions developed by different generations to tackle the cultural and ecosystem issues of various stages. They can create excellent cultural and eco environments for Kaohsiung.

■ It is a demonstration of genuine support from Kaohsiung City Government who decided to afford such an international competition, despite the current economic woes. We are pleased to review a large variety of works from all over the world.

■ The five selected works win the competition by marrying the architecture techniques and urban aesthetics of Kaohsiung. They are chosen by the musical talents of Kaohsiung and other parts of Taiwan because they promise to be great landmarks accessible to all the professional musicians.

■ The musical professionals in Kaohsiung have been waiting for such a venue for 30 years. It is hoped that this musical hall can allow them to take roots in Kaohsiung without going to Taipei.

■ Kaohsiung City Government offers great incentives and ambitious goals to encourage world-class architects to design their best works. Local residents in Kaoshiung are lucky that any of the five selected works will be meet their expectations in terms of vitality, environmental friendliness, technological and musical functions. The remarkable building will be born in Kaoshiung.

■ It is a daunting task to select the winners out of so many great works. All the selected works have their own merits and characteristics. We hope these young and seasoned teams from all over the world can perform even better in the second stage of the competition.
