Epic scenes: the biggest arts venue on Earth lands in Taiwan

Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Boasting the largest organ in Asia and four theatres, this enormous performing arts venue invites people to exercise, nap and even break into song

‘We wanted it to feel as informal as seeing a performance in a park’ … the National Kaohsiung Centre for the Arts Photograph: Shiyali/Getty Images

Looking like the colossal love child of a container ship and a whale, writhing above the treetops of Weiwuying park in the southern Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung, the world’s largest performing arts centre has a suitably immense presence. By turns galumphing and graceful, the roughly £260m hulk contains an opera house, concert hall, theatre and recital hall, seating up to 7,000 people within its curvaceous shell. As Taiwan faces ever more pressure for assimilation from mainland China, whose cultural building boom has led to a new museum or concert hall open practically every week in recent years, the National Kaohsiung Centre for the Arts, AKA Weiwuying, is a monumental statement that this plucky nation means business on the international cultural stage.

Gaping openings in the building’s hefty flanks beckon you into a cave-like landscape, where the floor rides up in great waves as the ceiling plunges down to meet the ground, forming a world of tunnels and canyons. The glossy-white steel skin is sliced open in places, bringing shafts of light into the space and offering intriguing glimpses of the venues within. It provides cooling respite from the tropical heat of this coastal city, channelling the breeze beneath its bulging belly to make a welcome place for picnics, tai-chi, yoga classes and some exhilarating swings.

“We were struck by the informality of the performing arts in Taiwan,” says Dutch architect Francine Houben, whose practice, Mecanoo (designers of the Birmingham Library), won the competition for the project in 2007. “Chinese opera has its origins in street theatre, so we wanted to make a place that would feel as casual and informal as going to see a performance in the park.”

Cooling respite … a yoga class at the National Kaohsiung Centre.

The venue’s ambience is more that of a leisure centre than an opera house, particularly compared with Taipei’s national theatre and concert hall, each built in 1987, which stand on either side of the capital’s central square, like a pair of regal temples from the Forbidden City. By contrast, Weiwuying’s artistic director, Chien Wen-Pin, hopes people will spill into its theatres from the park, and treat it as their living room. “We had over 50,000 people turn up to our open day,” he says. “People occupied the space in a way were weren’t planning or expecting, taking their shoes off, doing exercise, lying in the shade, even breaking into song as they entered the concert hall.”

Featuring the largest organ in Asia, designed as two thickets of bamboo with more than 9,000 pipes, the concert hall is a swirling symphony of oak and champagne-coloured seats, with a 22-tonne acoustic reflector dangling ominously from the ceiling. Despite its 2,000-person capacity, it feels surprisingly intimate, the furthest seat being 30 metres from the conductor. The Parisian magician of acoustics, Albert Xu, built a 1:10 model of it to ensure it provides the perfect reverberation time for everything from a classical orchestra to the twanging of the Taiwanese aboriginal mouth harp. He also worked his magic on the other three spaces, each designed with a distinct character and calibrated to accommodate a variety of art forms.

New Taiwan performing arts centre billed as largest in world

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan — A sprawling complex of four theatres billed as the biggest performing arts centre in the world has opened in southern Taiwan.

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan — A sprawling complex of four theatres billed as the biggest performing arts centre in the world has opened in southern Taiwan.

The National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts houses a 1,981-seat concert hall, a 2,236-seat opera house, a play house and a recital hall under a single roof covering 3.3 hectares (8.2 acres).

The opening season offers a range of artistic performances. The debut installation opera "Paradise Interrupted" is an international co-production with New York's Lincoln Center Festival, the Spoleto Festival USA and the Singapore International Festival of Arts. The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Gustavo Dudamel, who conducts in Taiwan for the first time, will perform in the venue's vineyard-style concert hall.

The centre, which opened last month, was built over eight years at a cost of NT$10.7 billion ($350 million) on the site of a former military barracks in Kaohsiung, a southern city of about 2.8 million people. Residents still call the new centre by the name of the military camp, Weiwyuing.

Performers are seeing the new venue as an opportunity.

"Not many people can say that they have performed" at Weiwyuing, said Chloe Young, a member of the Sydney Dance Company. She said it was an honour to be dancing there. "And I think it's really gonna boost my career, saying I performed in Taiwan, in an amazing theatre, amazing facility, and I feel super super lucky."

The design by Dutch architecture firm Mecanoo reflects the port city's tropical location and maritime links. It includes an undulating white roof and a large public space with hoists and other cargo ship features.

"I think what is really unique is this roof, what was inspired by the banyan trees with the crown," said Francine Houben, the creative director of Mecanoo. "I had to create a really new public space specifically for Taiwan, for Kaohsiung, that catches the wind of the ocean and the ventilation of the tropical space."

The concert hall has the biggest pipe organ in Asia with 9,085 pipes. Built by a German manufacturer, its asymmetric design recalls bamboo.

"I have played many organs both in Taiwan and abroad, but this one is the biggest and the best," said organist Liu Hsin-hung.

The centre also includes an outdoor amphitheatre.

He Wen-jhang, a 62-year-old retired physics and chemistry teacher who lives nearby, said he prefers to the art centre to another real estate development.

"Coming here to exchange views greatly influences citizens' temperament," He said. "In the past, people only rushed to factories to make a living. But now, we have a place to relax and chat to each other. This has a big impact on Kaohsiung's cultural aspect. A positive impact."

Berlin Philharmonic excited to perform at new concert hall in Taiwan

By Central News Agency
2018/11/12 11:11

Members of the German orchestra Berliner Philharmoniker said Sunday in Taipei that they were very much looking forward to playing at the new Weiwuying Concert Hall in Kaohsiung.

"We are particularly excited to be going down to Weiwuying to perform as the first international orchestra," Stanley Dodds, media chairman and second violin of the Berliner Philharmoniker, said at a press conference.

Dodds congratulated Taiwan on the new concern hall in Kaohsiung's National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts, known as Weiwuying.

He said Taiwan must be commended for having "the foresight to build such an extensive cultural center" and realizing that culture is the heart and spirit of every society.

Dodds said that for an orchestra and its conductor, a concert hall is like an instrument.

"I believe in Kaohsiung, we have the possibility to have a new Stradivari for the orchestra and conductors, so we are really excited to try this new instrument," Dodds said, referring to the famous violins made by Antonio Stradivari.

"I am sure it's going to be a great place," Dodds said, adding that the concert hall will attract not only local performers, but also international tourists.

It is the Berliner Philharmoniker's fifth visit to Taiwan, the first being in 2005, but is the first time for Venezuelan superstar conductor Gustavo Dudamel.

"I am very privileged to be here with this amazing orchestra," said Dudamel, a regular guest conductor of the orchestra for 10 years. "I think we will have a great time sharing beautiful music with this legendary group of artists."

Dudamel said conducting the Berliner Philharmoniker, was like driving "an amazing car." "Every pilot will drive differently," he said. "In my case, after 10 years, we have developed a connection. We understand each other."

Dudamel said he watched the films of the orchestra's previous performances in Taiwan and was very impressed with the audience. "I am opening a new book in my life having this chance to be with this wonderful audience," he said.

The orchestra has been looking forward to returning to Taiwan ever since its first visit, according to Dodds. "We have the impression that classical music is like pop music in Taiwan," he said.

Mezzo-soprano Tamara Mumford said the audiences in Taiwan are known for their love of music. "I am looking forward to being able to experience that," she said.

The Berliner Philharmoniker arrived in Taiwan on Saturday on the second leg of its Asian concert tour. It hosted a concern at the National Concert Hall in Taipei Sunday, with a second concert scheduled for Tuesday.

The concert in Kaohsiung will begin at 7 p.m. on Nov. 14. Live broadcast will be available at the Weiwuying's outdoor theater, at the Pingtung Performing Arts Center, and on Chunghwa Telecom MOD service.

The Kaohsiung concert will also be broadcast live from the Digital Concert Hall, the Berliner Philharmoniker's online concert venue.

New Kaohsiung hall has amazing acoustics: Berliner Philharmoniker

2018/11/15 13:31:19

Conductor Gustavo Dudamel (left) greets the audience outside the concert hall.

Nov. 15 (CNA) Berliner Philharmoniker performed in the newly opened National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts Wednesday, with Conductor Gustavo Dudamel praising the venue's great acoustics.

On its fifth visit to Taiwan, the Berliner Philharmoniker played Bernstein's "Divertimento" and Mahler's "Fifth Symphony," with an outdoor live broadcast attracting some 15,000 people.

Venezuelan conductor Dudamel said that compared to the similarly structured Berliner Philharmonie in Berlin, the Kaohsiung hall is like a brand-new instrument, with its own unique qualities and amazing acoustics.

Ludwig Quandt, 1st principal cello of the Berliner Philharmoniker, added that the acoustics are smooth and soft, so that the performers can hear each other on stage even better than in Berlin.

At the end of the performance, Dudamel went out to greet the audience outside the concert hall.

"It is my huge privilege to be here," Dudamel said to the crowd. "You are a wonderful audience and we felt your energy inside. We will see you very soon."

According to the venue's website, the concert hall features a vineyard style, with the seating arrangement encircling the stage, which allows audience at various heights to enjoy the same acoustic and visual effects.

New York Times praises Taiwan performing arts center in Kaohsiung

Architect Francine Houben describes Weiwuying as 'living room' for culture

By Matthew Strong,Taiwan News, Staff Writer
2019/01/30 16:40

(Taiwan News) - The National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts, also known as Weiwuying (衛武營), is a “living room for culture,” the New York Times wrote Tuesday, quoting Francine Houben, the Dutch architect of the world’s largest single-roof performing arts house.

The paper said its opening last October signaled the end of Kaohsiung’s reputation among the Taiwanese as a cultural desert.

Despite its recent arrival, it has been off to a rousing start, attracting about 800,000 visitors during its first nine weeks, with audience members not only arriving into town from Taipei, but also from Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore, according to the New York Times.

Houben wanted the outside of the building to have the feel of a container ship rather than of a luxury yacht, while on the inside, a theater consultant made sure that both the acoustics and the viewing would be more intimate than the large space would lead one to believe.

The center’s “working-class aesthetic” clashes with the new luxury apartments popping up in the area, where residents who might not be interested in theater have been hoping for a new wave of revitalization and business opportunities.

Covered public areas and the adjacent Weiwuying Municipal Park have attracted yoga and martial arts practitioners, emphasizing the complex’s ‘living room’ function, according to the New York Times.

Weiwuying includes a 2,236-seat Opera House, a 1,981-seat Concert Hall, a 1,210-seat Playhouse, a 434-seat Recital Hall and an outdoor theater.
