Really great work with the overlays. Looks as if the church has been a part of the landscape all along. Well, I thought that until the pole with multiple cross arms caught my eye. Inside Charlie Chaplin's house

I've always heard about Charlie Chaplin’s house at 1085 Summit Dr. in Beverly Hills. Built primarily in 1922 by studio carpenters, the house became known as the “Breakaway House” because of how quickly it started to fall apart. The carpenters who built it were used to constructing things designed only to last as long as the movie’s shooting schedule. Oopsies! I've seen old photos of the outside, but not of the interior until I came across this atmospheric shot. Oh, if these walls could talk!

PS - ImageShack have just done a makeover and the "forum" link it provides only results in a thumbnail version of the photo. The actual photo is 830KB. Can anyone tell me why it's coming up so small here? If you click on it, you can see a larger version.

Us Photobucket users had to put up with a terrible "upgrade" to the site last year which screwed up functionality and usability. I'm glad we're not the only ones affected. I can't offer any help for a quick way to post full size images, but here's yours:

Chop Suey was developed by Chinese living in America, and is therefore still Chinese food. Same with fortune cookies - developed in San Francisco's China Town.
And I've had authentic Chinese food in China. Monterey Park has nothing to worry about.

The secret is to copy the location of the enlarged image on the ImageShack site and then use the image insert tool on this site.

Academy Museum/ May Company Building

You may or may not know that AMPAS (Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences) is in the process of turning the May Company building on Fairfax and Wilshire into their new motion picture museum. It's about two years away from opening.

http://www.oscars.org/academymuseum/index.html

Among other things, on their site they have a link to the museum with drawings and renderings and a section devoted to the May Company building with a lot of photographs and a magazine article from the May 1940 edition of The Architectural Forum, detailing the building and it's floors. Most of the photos are from the 1940's.

I don't believe this photograph to have been posted here before.

AMPAS

It's an aerial of the May Company from 1940. You can see Simon's on the corner of Fairfax and Wilshire, too.

What an impressive photograph. I don't recall seeing that huge roof top Mobil Gas sign before.
Good find Martin Pal.

I've never heard of this place.

Look at the photographer's shadow (s p o o k y)! He looks like a silent film villain.

So is this ranch a part of the movie industry? (a place to learn stunts for westerns) -Like Inceville.
I need to check a map and see where Calabasas is exactly.

Sorry to disappoint you, e_r, but it looks like the ranch was named after the Stunt brothers. From stuntranch.ucnrs.org:

Quote:
The Stunt brothers, Harry, Walter, and Ernest – and their cousin Sidney from Kensington, England, homesteaded the Reserve land in the late 1800s, building a small cabin on the site around 1885. President Grover Cleveland approved the original homestead in 1889, and Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt approved additional Stunt family homesteads in 1899 and 1904 respectively. The 300 sq. foot cabin, believed to be the first building in the Cold Creek area was completely destroyed, as were all other structures at Stunt Ranch, in the 1993 Malibu fire.
The ranch is on Stunt Road, about halfway between Calabasas and the ocean.

3900 W. Century Boulevard, Inglewood

This is just east of Prairie Avenue, on the south side of Century, across the street from Hollywood Park, on January 5, 1963:

Still looking good on April 18, 1966:

December 20, 2013; no more restaurant or beauty salon, and it's now the Airport Park View (or Parkview, depending on the sign):

The decorative screens over the windows are gone, the globe lights are gone, the original roofline is covered, and the original entrance canopy is either gone or covered:

It actually looks a bit scary:

Excellent research HossC! So much for my vision of hundreds of cowboy actors/extras descending on the place to hone their skills.
..but it's nice to see the ranch is now a state park.
