Did you read the Hyperloop document? He also gave a scenario where cars could be attached to the pods so it would be a high speed land ferry.
It's great to dream big, and Musk's
crowdsourcing this hyperloop idea to the world so that one day maybe something like this might be accomplished.
Musk's Hyperloop-cocktail napkin sketch?
maybe, but many great ideas have started out on those little paper napkins
Elon Musk/
Tesla employees are single-handedly revolutionizing the automotive industry with an all electric vehicle capable of travelling 285mi/458km and gaining numerous accolades (Model S sedan ranked as Motor Trend Car of the Year, best model Consumer Reports has tested, NHTSA 5 star crash ratings). Not to mention a 17" Touchscreen interface that replaces all center console controls (with software that is constantly updateable, not unlike your smartphone). Tesla is currently working on a battery pack that will allow travel up to 500 miles/804km, and is in the process of building the electric charging station network themselves. If you have a Tesla car, you'll be able to charge the car at a Tesla high-speed charging station for free (20 minutes for ~40% charge I think?) or
in the future pay the equivalent of a tank of gas to have a Tesla-designed robot swap out your low battery with a fully charged one.
His other company
SpaceX is groundbreaking the private space cargo transport industry (first private company to send cargo payload to the International Space Station) with the ultimate goal of creating human transport to reach Mars.
The other company Musk's involved with, Solar City, is reducing reliance on the power grid and putting some electricity back on the grid in the form of thousands of residential and commercial solar power installations.
Musk seems to accomplish almost everything he puts his mind to, and the hyperloop idea probably partially came out of the fact that he has to travel from San Fran to LA countless times a year with the 3 companies in which he's involved. Musk may have a great ego, but he's one of the great minds/innovators of our time.
