That is one tall tower crane for a site that hasn't even finished foundation work...

Of course, but it will be linked to the building or run up the middle of the building. Right now its standing on its own for seemingly no reason as the site is still below ground level. Its probably 1.5 to 2x as tall as the average crane is for a sit under foundation work.

New photos have been added to the Moderne's facebook page. The building is already being cladded.

SO awesome. I can't wait to see a skyline photo with this tower completed. Milwaukee is one of those cities that could really do with even more new tall buildings to reflect the urban core's revival.

Since this thread seems to be mainly updated by Chicagoans:

I get that Milwaukee hasn't seen much in the skyscraper department, but why is this a good project? We've already seen that Milw can produce very, very good architecture in midrises and townhomes (the Beerline area, etc) that by and large puts Chicago to shame.

However, the Moderne is a project we'd be bitching about if they tried to build it in River North. Large expanses of concrete? Check. Small windows with chunky mullions? Check.

^^^ Not really. No one has a problem with the use of concrete in Chicago. In fact, it tends to be praised (Contemporaire, Roosevelt Dorm, etc) when used appropriately. People have a problem with beige precast being used to poorly ape historic styles.

The Moderne on the other hand uses precast relatively sparingly and uses a striking white shade of it that is actually appealing to look at. At the same time, they aren't trying to pass it off as anything else. They aren't trying to pretend it's limestone or make it look like copper panels (i.e. the horrific teal on Ritz). Finally, the design is actually reasonably successful at referencing the streamline modern style without trying to ape it. The building uses design principles that were applied across the style (to buildings, teapots, whatever) and successfully applies them to a modern building with modern materials.

So while it is nothing ground breaking, it is a handsome building and successful example of post-modernism as it is meant to be built.

Its because Wisconsin's concealed carry law went to effect two months ago. These signs are everywhere in Milwaukee, just about all business have them at the door or in a window.

I was in Milwaukee last week and I got a height from blueprints for The Moderne; 315'-7" to the parapet on the mechanical penthouse and 299'-3" for the main roof. This is down from the 348' figure previously reported, although the floor count grew from 30 to 31.
