Great angle SD - Is your lense stabilized - or do you have a real steady hand on a cold and windy day.

This thought just occured to me. How do they poor the concrete on the sloped levels without the concrete flowing and bunching up at the lower end?

Do they use a special concrete with lower viscosity? Do they poor the concrete in strips?

I am absolutely amazed at the speed they are moving on this project. With the way they are "spiraling up" the floor construction it would have made for a real cool time lapse video!

It also looks like they're gonna need to jump that crane pretty soon.

Oh and BTW, great freakin' pics! You guys are the best!

Are they using a car elevator in this building? How do cars get from below the lobby to the parking above the lobby?

^^ man, it would save so much money if they would just paint that concrete and fill in the gaps with windows instead of using that fancy-old premade facade

Thanks! I missed the photo. On such a small site I had a hard time visualizing a ramp somewhere "behind" the lobby. So a good portion of that first floor has the ramp and is unusable.

Damn, really? How many are there above-ground total? And am I imagining things, or are there like 4 below grade?

Anyone have any idea of how they can poor concrete on a slope like that and not have it just overflow and fall off the end?

Yes 2 below Wacker (restaurant) - 2 below river (parking) ( note the ramp for the lower parking level )

I;ve always wondered that too. Like water, it should just gather at the lowest point, which would be at the base of the ramp. My only guess is that cement is thick enough that it doesn't slide.

Concrete mixes have a slump associated with them, which is a way of understanding the viscosity of the mix under its own weight and hence its ability to flow. Once you have the right slump for your mix, the concrete will flow in the desired manner. Admixtures and different types of Portland can be used in the mix design to cause a delayed set or a very rapid set, or even a high flow followed by a very rapid set after a certain amount of time.
