I expect that the outer boroughs will be getting more proposals for 200m towers than Manhattan 10 years from now and will almost certainly get a 1000 footer proposed before 2020. Hell, even Staten Island will probably get a 200m tower proposed before 2020.

I'm starting to think that a serious proposal for a megatall (almost certainly on 57th street, Midtown East or somewhere in the Hudson Yards) will be a reality by 2020 with a completion date before 2030.
Yeah, most likely. I said the same thing in another thread that by the decade's end we'll see at least one serious megatall proposal. I just love how New York evolves naturally / gradually.

Maybe sbarn get do a rendering from that perspective.

The New York skyline is one of a kind. And with the recent boom the city will even get more massive.

By 2020 there will be at least five 400m+ towers completed:

225W57th: 472m
432 PA: 426m
1WTC: 417m / 541m
2WTC: 411m
HY North: 408m
---------------------
ESB: 381m / 449m

Lol wait! I'm still looking out for his Brooklyn rendering. I can't wait to see that one.

I also can't wait until Brooklyn actually starts building taller. Imagine two huge (distinct) skylines with our bridges and the River and the density!

around 2040-60 there should be a connected skyline from downtown to midtown and skyscrapers should start creeping up the sides of central park along with the other boroughs.

The rate proposals are popping up, I bet sooner. Biking along the West side, theres already projects sprouting out and a couple of empty lots. I'm sure these will transform soon enough. If there is a megatall in the future, downtown would be the best location. Midtown is just too dense, and a megatall needs to standout fully. Plus it would complement the NY big 3(WTC 1,2,3). Like an NYC Pudong really.

I'd love to see a megatall or a taller tower than 1WTC in Downtown. But it won't happen, at least not in 10 - 15 years. 1WTC's 'iconic' status is written in stone, sadly. Noone would dare to challenge 1WTC heightwise. We already had a similar discussion with the 22 Thames Street proposal, where developers wouldn't go for the maximum height because 'it would interfere with the WTC'. It's ridiculous and tells you a lot about the taboo of building taller than the WTC. Sure, it will change in the future (out of need mostly), but as I said for now we won't see anything tall (500m+) rise in Lower Manhattan.

The first megatall will mostly likely rise at Hudson Yards / West Side / Manhattan West / MSG. There's enough space there.

I don't know since I don't have insider information, but I'd assume that it's either:
225 W57th
107 W57th
Or the downtown towers

Thanks to Funkyskunk2!

New rendering showing 432 PA (426m, u/c), One57 (306m, t/o) and Torre Verre (320m, prep). Now imagine 107W57th (366m, prep) and 225W57th (472m, prep) in that view!

I won't be online for about a month.

Please feel free to update the thread whenever there's news about a New York supertall (or a 200m+ skyscraper), i.e. height changes, new renderings, status (under construction - on hold), financing etc.

Thanks and see ya soon.

Oh, and why don't they just build a small fleet of massive barges, erect clusters of super-talls on them, and float them up and down the Hudson, and between the bridges on the other side?
