That stage was designed by Etienne Gaboury!

... but yeah, it just looks ridiculous now.

I didn't realize it...

I envision a new stage, something from the mind of Antoine Predock, A curtain of glass maybe, in the shape of a Canada Goose, (Branta canadensis), with a spire of black steel to signify it's long neck stretched outward toward the North as it returns from it's Southern nesting grounds..

Agree, Time for an upgrade...

I thought the original Gaboury design was dropped due to cost. wasn't it supposed to involve a grassed over berm of some kind?

I had heard the same as Tacheguy.

I'd rather see the Forks put up smaller temporary festival stages then keep that monstrosity they call Scotia Bank Stage.

Pretty sure it's a Gaboury, and the Winnipeg Architecture Foundation's website seems to corroborate that:

http://www.winnipegarchitecture.ca/etienne-gaboury/

Although I do admit it is nowhere near as impressive as the rest of his works. I'm sure those pesky engineers must have been up to their cost-saving ways

That said, it just looks out of place now.

It does look very sturdy.

And it has those lovely straight lines and rectangular features that us engineers just love!

Strong, cost effective, easy to maintain - what's not to like?

^ What remarkable restraint drew, I thought for sure there would be some mention of what happens when architects get overly-involved with designing stages

But I can't take potshots at anyone, being a member of a profession that is accused (wrongfully, I might add) of making things less fun for everyone.

"It does look very sturdy."

It's listed on Gaboury's site for projects as well. It might just be one of those we designed something that won and then had to build something else due to budget.

I'm actually an architecture dropout.

I actually went to the University of Manitoba for a couple of years, but I hated what was going on in studio and even though I was on the Dean's List I just wasn't happy. So I ditched it.

These days I am a Solution Architect (so I got to keep the A in my job title acronym), but I've always told people that I'm an SA: Smart Ass.

The "Scotiabank" has quietly been remove from the name — as you can see can see there's no sign on the stage anymore. It's now called "The Festival Stage at The Forks." Makes me wonder if The Forks is planning on doing something with the stage...

it's just a stage that gets heavily used, something permanant is required. if you get creative with stage design, it limits what it can be used for. CUBE come to mind!
