Matthew T G, 68, served in the Army’s signals wing. He has taken up agriculture on a 10-acre land, which was allotted to him by the government after retirement. He grows maize, millet, tur dal, groundnut and corn. Apart from it, his garden has a variety of fruits, rubber, coconut and areca. He is supported by his wife Philomena, a retired teacher.
In the 10-acre land, he has used every inch of land without wasting any space. He has cultivated sona masoori rice in half acre. The rest of the land has 2,500 rubber plants, 100 coconut trees, 500 areca trees, 30 nutmeg trees, 500 agarwood, black pepper, lemon, apple, pomegranate, sweet lime, pistachio, medicinal plants and many others.
“The interest to grow north Karnataka crops was triggered by a couple from Bagalkot district, who worked with me for a long time. As a result, I started to experiment with groundnut, millet, corn, tur dal and maize. I used only organic manure to grow. The result was positive and I was successful in getting good yield,” said Matthew, who after retirement worked as a teacher in government colleges in Panja and Kadaba. “I grow everything that is required for my house. I buy only onion and garlic from outside,” said Matthew.

As posted earlier alternative is to cultivate ocean forests and harvest in a controlled manner and then produce various organic products listed earlier to generate alternative jobs. This will reduce carbon dioxide level & increase oxygen level of sea water and help in growth of planktons and rebalancing biogeochemical cycle mainly oceanic carbon cycle and in turn nourish fishes which feed on these things. Here are a few exemplary attempts to restore sea forests - 1 2 3 4 4 . Seagrass meadows absorb 30-40 times more carbon than a normal forest. Puttur farmer produces over 2000 winter seedlings
For plastic-free farming we have to get rid of plastic seedling/plug/pro trays. I think it is possible to come up with leaf cups & trays for example many gunda/kottiges used as cups kept on arecanut leaf trays - disadvantage is high labour cost and one use. The alternatives available are paperchain pots/trays 2 3 4, paper seed trays 2 but they are not 100% plastic-free since they use plastic trays. Another alternative may be soil block makers 2 3 4 5 if used without plastic trays. There is enough scope for automation of soil block making, watering (for example, capillary hydroponic method & IOT watering) & then planting 1 2 and also greenhouse/coolinghouse automation. To make all these 100% plastic-free we may have to come up with earthen trays or wood trays or make use of metal trays.

Quote:
Speaking during its launch, M. Suresh Bhandary, Managing Director of the cooperative said the new product has been prepared from sugar-based syrups and natural black pepper powder and ginger extracts.
The cooperative has now produced 12 tonnes of spicy toffee. Its production will be increased depending on market demand, he said.
Mr. Bhandary said in olden days, some people traditionally made the toffee using black pepper, ginger and jaggery at homes. The CAMPCO has borrowed the same concept in making its new product using sugar-based syrups.
At the same time, it is doing research and development on replacing sugar-based syrups with jaggery for mass production of its spicy toffee.
The R&D is expected to be over in another three months. Once the jaggery-based formula is ready, the cooperative will use the same to have the traditional flavour.

A film-tech start-up looks at bridging supply chain gap for new talents
Quote:
AJ Vinayak Mangaluru | Updated on November 26, 2019 Published on November 26, 2019
Platform offers actors, technicians, producers and directors a full ecosystem
After fin-tech and edu-tech start-ups, now it is time for film-tech start-ups.
Coastal Breeze Productions Pvt Ltd, a start-up with four promoters from coastal Karnataka, is planning a technology-based movie-making platform for new talent entering the industry.
Murali Sarali, Founder and Promoter of Coastal Breeze, told BusinessLine that the start-up is in the process of creating a cognitive platform for entertainment and creative industry. The idea is to provide a platform to connect new talent with the other stakeholders in the industry supply chain.
The platform, ‘1ME’, is a single unified platform for media and entertainment sector, he said.
Sheshadri Udupa, another Founder and Promoter of Coastal Breeze, said that though there are many new talent, all of them do not get an opportunity.
“We thought of setting up a movie-making supply chain with ecosystem connectivity. It is a kind of a platform where the actors, technicians, producers, and directors can find the entire supply chain ecosystem,” he said.
Murali Sarali said that ‘1ME’ wants to create a seamless experience for new talents, investors, movie-makers and viewers. It will not only help bring structured approach to entire creative work such as movie making, but also give complete visibility across the process.
“We are piloting the platform and working with a few beta customers,” he said, adding that the platform has process and features to plan, prepare and execute pre-production and post-production works, and marketing and promotion activities.
Coastal Breeze’s platform will use machine learning technology to help make data-driven predictions, especially to optimise movie-making supply chain, marketing campaigns, and box office predictions. Murali Sarali said it will help transform creative industry business into more of data-driven prescriptive investment for investors and stakeholders.
Kannada movie
As part of its strategy, this film-tech start-up has now come out with a product in the form of a Kannada movie. Murali Sarali said that the recent developments in Kannada film industry is encouraging new talents. Many content-oriented movies have made a mark in the last one decade, as the audience supports such movies.
Added to this, many major names are coming forward to work with new talent in movie making, as new ideas are coming from that segment.
These factors encouraged the founders to seed the idea of ‘1ME’, and plan the Kannada movie Mundina Nildana (the next stop) project.
With Radhika Narayan (who played lead roles in hit Kannada movies such as U-Turn and Rangitaranga) and Dattanna (who played the role of an aged scientist in Akshay Kumar’s Mission Mangal) in the main roles, the movie is directed by Vinay Bharadwaj, a former investment banker from Singapore. The movie has seven songs composed by seven different music directors across the country.
Terming Mundina Nildana as a good experience, Sheshadri Udupa said: “We will document it. This repeatable model could be used not only for our production house but for others also.”
(Both Murali Sarali and Sheshadri Udupa have their own technology start-ups also. Suresh Kumar, a Mangaluru-based pulmonologist, and the Gulf-based NRI Taranath Rai are the other promoters of the film-tech start-up.)
The start-up is planning to raise seed funding by February, and is in discussion with a few investors in this regard, Murali Sarali added.

KCCI urges Dr. C. N. Ashwathnarayan, Dy. CM & IT Minister to Establish a IT Park in City
Quote:
Mangaluru : Kanara Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) wishes to inform you about the representation sent to Dr. C. N. Ashwathnarayan, Dy. CM & IT Minister on the proposal of establishing an IT Park in Mangaluru. With this representation, KCCI wishes to impress upon the Hon. Minister to take up this cause for building an IT Ecosystem in Mangaluru Region.
Following is the letter sent to the Minister:
To,
Dr. C. N. Ashwathnarayan Honorable Deputy Chief Minister & Minister of Higher Education & IT & BT, S&T, Government of Karnataka Bengaluru.
Respected Sir,
Sub: Establishing an Information Technology (IT) Park at Mangaluru, Dakshina Kannada.
Greetings from Kanara Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI), Mangaluru – a District level Chamber engaged in promoting Trade, Commerce, Industry for the general welfare of the people in the erstwhile Dakshina Kannada District for the past eight decades. KCCI has always been proactive in taking initiatives for the economic and social developments of D.K. The New Mangalore Port, Airport, National Highways, Railways, MRPL and MSEZ, CEOL are examples of the same. Present status of Mangaluru which calls for immediate establishment of an IT Park:
1. A tier-2 city with a huge pool of IT and ITES talent, but very few job opportunities:
Although Mangaluru is a Tier 2 City, a large ready pool of IT & ITES talent is available here. Mangaluru – Udupi (Manipal) region is known as the Education Hub of Karnataka State. There are more than 20 Engineering Colleges and 100+ Non Engineering Colleges with thousands of students graduating every year. These are highly committed resources, with high productivity, less commuting time, etc. However there is a lack of job opportunities for these graduates in Mangaluru. Even among the lateral skilled employees, many prefer to work from Bengaluru as there are no employment opportunities for their spouse or even for themselves in future. This lack of IT ecosystem puts additional pressure on Bengaluru for which the government is already contemplating decongestion as part of the proposed new IT policy of 2019.
2: The Centre for Entrepreneurship Opportunities and Learning (CEOL) and STPI Incubation Centres are churning out incubated Software enterprises:
KCCI has worked with the Government to promote a Centre for Entrepreneurship Opportunities and Learning (CEOL) in Mangaluru under the guidance and support of the Finance Minister Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman. CEOL Incubation Centre is now functioning close to capacity. Companies incubated 18 months ago have to plan to move out as they grow but are unable to find suitable commercial space at reasonable cost. Apart from this, the Software Technology Park of India (STPI) is also fully occupied and the IT enterprises that are located here have to vacate after their mandatory time, to give place for fresh entities.
3. Established IT companies operating in Mangaluru in need of Bridge Space to Develop :
Currently, there are more than 150+ IT companies operating out of Mangaluru like Infosys, Cognizant along with some successful homegrown companies like Robosoft, Diya Systems, Semnox etc. There are also many companies with 5-30 employees. However, there are not many commercial spaces in and around the city of Mangaluru available at reasonable cost for these companies. These companies either have to migrate to Bengaluru to grow or they need to be housed in suitable working spaces that will enable them to go into fast track growth.
Establishing an IT Park within Mangaluru – a solution to change the status:
From the above it is clear that there is a need to build an IT Park with affordable rentals where many of these companies can operate and expand and have enough space for their natural growth in the city. This IT Park would also help larger IT and ITES to set up their Units in Mangalore. This effort will ensure that our talent pool will be retained and employed here. Moreover the pressure on Bengaluru will be significantly reduced. This IT park in Mangaluru can be a shared working space for multiple IT & ITES companies at one place including adequate Executive as well as leisure infrastructure for the IT employees.
3.25 Acres Readily available Land earmarked for the purpose:
It is heartening to note that there is a readily available land to the extent of 3.25 Acres of Land earmarked by KEONICS for IT Park at Blueberry Hills, Kuntikana, Derebail within the city corporation limits of Mangaluru. Moreover, the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), Mangaluru is adjacent to the proposed site. KCCI would like to work with the Government to take this infrastructure initiative forward. It is suggested that the IT Park may be built in 2 Phases of around 1 lakh sq.ft. each with suitable infrastructure to support varied kind, size and type of companies. Common infrastructure like food courts, parking, conference rooms, classrooms, guest lounges, few guest rooms and can also include a small plug and play facility to support startups.
All these facilities can have support centers of the Karnataka State IT department and Start up cell. NASSCOM, CII, TIE, mentoring systems/networks etc. Larger IT companies can be convinced to move part of their BPO Operations from Tier 1 cities to Mangaluru, thus reducing the cost for those companies which will also have the advantage of retention of their human resources for a longer period. This mix of Large, Medium and Small IT & ITES companies within an IT Park will provide the necessary thrust in creating the IT ecosystem in Mangaluru to flourish.
We hope you will take up the above mentioned issue in right earnest and it will be completed in your kind hands.
Thanking you,
Yours faithfully, Isaac Vas, President, KCCI

On one hand the argument is that Mangaluru is economical compared to tier-I cities. On the other hand there is also an argument is Mangaluru is not economical because there is no government sponsored IT Park.
What is needed badly is a Knowledge Infrastructure Policy favouring tier-II cities so that startups can flourish in these cities also.
Support IT ecosystem development in Mangaluru-Udupi-Manipal region: KCCI

Stating that Mangaluru-Udupi-Manipal region has a huge pool of talent, KCCI President said only a few job opportunities are there in this region
The Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has urged the Karnataka government to establish an IT (information technology) park in Mangaluru to help develop an IT ecosystem in Mangaluru-Udupi-Manipal region.
In a letter to the Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for IT and BT, KCCI said that a mix of large, medium and small IT and IT-enabled services (ITES)companies within an IT park will provide the necessary thrust in creating an IT ecosystem to flourish in Mangaluru.
Isaac Vas, President of KCCI, said that there are more than 150 IT companies operating in the region.
However, not many commercial spaces are available at reasonable cost for these companies in and around Mangaluru. These companies either have to migrate to Bengaluru to grow or they need to be housed in suitable working spaces that will enable them to go into fast-track growth mode.
He said that there is a need to build an IT park with affordable rentals where many of these companies can operate, expand and have enough space for their growth in the city. This IT park would also help larger IT and ITES to set up their units in Mangaluru.
He said this effort will ensure that the talent pool from the region will be retained and employed in the region. Moreover the pressure on Bengaluru will be significantly reduced.
He said the proposed IT park can be a shared working space for multiple IT and ITES companies at one place.
Stating that KEONICS has already identified a 3.25-acre land for IT park in Mangaluru, he said KCCI would like to work with the Government to take this infrastructure initiative forward.
KCCI suggested that the IT park be built in two phases of around 1 lakh sq ft each with suitable infrastructure to support varied kind, size and type of companies.
Larger IT companies can be convinced to move part of their BPO operations from tier-1 cities to Mangaluru. Such a move could help reduce the cost for those companies that will also have the advantage of retention of their human resources for a longer period.
“This mix of large, medium and small IT and ITES companies within an IT park will provide the necessary thrust in creating the IT ecosystem to flourish in Mangaluru,” he said.

Why not the state government increase the rent of IT Park space in the parched city and earn some money? They have to exploit the ecosystem in the parched city to make money for using for flood relief works in North Karnataka. Otherwise it would be an useless ecosystem.

KCCI bats for creation of IT park in Mangaluru
Quote:
The Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has urged Deputy Chief Minister C.N. Ashwath Nanarayan, who is in charge of the IT and BT Department, to help establish an IT park in Mangaluru, which has an abundant pool of talent.
In a recent letter to Dr. Narayan, KCCI president Issac Vas said that though Mangaluru, a Tier II city, has a huge IT and ITES talent pool, it lacks adequate job opportunities. The region has over 20 engineering colleges and over 100 non-engineering colleges with thousands of students graduating every year. They are highly committed resources with high productivity, he said.
Mr. Vas noted that even among employees with lateral skills, many prefer to work in Bengaluru as there are no job opportunities in the region. This lack of an IT ecosystem in Mangaluru puts additional pressure on Bengaluru, which the government intends to decongest through the new IT policy. He noted that the Centre for Entrepreneurship Opportunities and Learning, a KCCI initiative supported by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, was functioning close to its capacity. Companies incubated for 18 months have to move out, but no commercial space is available outside.
Apart from this, the Software Technology Park of India (STPI) is also fully occupied and the IT enterprises located there have to vacate after their mandatory time, to give space for fresh entities. Even the existing 150-odd IT companies in Mangaluru are facing space crunch and may be forced to migrate to Bengaluru to grow, he said.
All this indicates a dire need for an IT park in Mangaluru with affordable rentals. The park could also help larger IT and ITES to open shop in Mangaluru and use local technical talent, he said. Mr. Vas said a 3.25-acre plot was available at Bluberry Hills, Kuntikana, earmarked by KEONICS for an IT park. The STPI is adjacent to this plot. An IT park may be built at this place in two phases, he suggested.

Flanders trade commission ready for expertise exchange with Karnataka
Quote:
The Trade Commission of Flanders, Belgium, is ready to facilitate exchange of expertise in solid waste management, innovative packaging and healthcare equipment that the coastal region could benefit from, said Flanders Trade and Investment Commissioner Jayanth Nadiger on Monday.
Interacting with the media during a Confederation of Indian Industry-promoted tour of the region to meet stakeholders here, Mr. Nadiger said the commission would also extend expertise in the manufacturing sector, including 3D printing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, if there is a critical mass for it. The commission can play a proactive role in providing access to potential exporters, especially smaller companies, to the European market through the Flanders region.
Mr. Nadiger said the commission would carry out GAP analysis in terms of products, technology and services and work all channels that may help trade both in Flanders and in the Karnataka coast.
Stating that the Flanders region was a hub for cutting-edge manufacturing, textiles and food processing, the trade commissioner said Mangaluru could also benefit from its expertise in solid waste management. “We have VITO, a research organisation that has technology which enables cities to tackle this issue,” he said. Expertise in manufacturing capital equipment could help the city, which is a medical hub of the region, to gain access to quality hospital equipment, he added.
Vermeiren Belgie NV, which has specialised in the area, has set up a manufacturing unit at Sri City near Chennai and is looking to meet the needs of hospitals in the area, he said. Mr. Nadiger said Flanders also has technology that could address India’s concerns and needs on single-use plastic.

Adopt drip irrigation to save water, says Horticulture Dept.
Quote:
With water scarcity over the years becoming a cause of concern for farmers in Dakshina Kannada, the Department of Horticulture has advised them to opt for drip irrigation on a large scale to save water and also crops during summer.
The State government, which declared Bantwal and Mangaluru taluks as drought-hit in 2017, again declared the entire Dakshina Kannada as partially drought-hit this January. Uncontrolled exploitation of groundwater and deforestation have resulted in the groundwater level falling below 500 ft in some pockets of the district.
If existing water is judiciously made use of by adopting drip irrigation for arecanut, coconut, banana, cashew, pineapple and other horticultural crops, 40 % to 50 % of water can be saved, said Deputy Director, Department of Horticulture, Dakshina Kannada, H.R. Nayak.
Nutrients can also be fed to the crops through drip irrigation, he added.
If agriculturists adopted drip irrigation in farm land up to five acres, the government provides subsidy up to 90 % for such land holdings. As many small farmers fell under this category, the government subsidy helped them immensely, he said.
In case if drip irrigation was adopted for crops spread over five acres and up to 12.50 acres, the government will provide 45 % subsidy to such farmers.
Mr. Nayak said that there is a wrong perception among some farmers that the entire farm land, especially in arecanut plantations, should be made wet to irrigate palms or plants. It is not needed, if water enough is fed to the roots. If drip irrigation system is adopted, it also helped in controlling the growth of weeds in plantations.
The Deputy Director said that Dakshina Kannada had about 1,53,000 hectares under horticultural crops. Of this, about 94,000 hectares are under arecanut and about 27,000 hectares are under coconut.
Mr. Nayak said that the government gave preference to farmers belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes while sanctioning subsidy. The government-approved agencies will help farmers adopt drip irrigation.
If drip irrigation is adopted, it also helped farmers to expand the area of crops as water saved can be diverted to grow the same crops or others.
And, water could also be saved for drinking. Pressure controlled drip irrigation systems are now available, he said.

Khader laments lack of industrial investments in Ira industrial area
Quote:
Former minister and MLA U T Khader, rued the fact that people are hesitating from investing in Ira industrial area even after some industrialists applied for land there, as some industries functioning there had closed down. He was addressing a press meet at Ullal on Monday December 9.
"The gross domestic product (GDP) of the country has slipped. Therefore, it may take some time for the industries to come up at Ira. In the past, heads of ten pharmaceutical companies had visited the area but had dithered from investing here, duly citing lack of proper road connectivity. Thereafter, a good road has been laid to the area. In the recent past, there are complaints that youngsters are using this road to have fun and engage in other activities by roaming around in their motorbikes. We therefore, propose to close the road by installing gates, and by posting watchmen," he explained.

Karnataka begins discussions on ‘knowledge and health corridor’
Quote:
With the proposed ‘knowledge and health corridor’ between Manipal in Udupi district and Konaje in Mangaluru taluk, Karnataka wants to capitalise on the strength of the region, according to Charulata Somal, Managing Director of Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC).
At the inauguration of a workshop for stakeholders on the proposed ‘Manipal-Konaje Knowledge and Health Corridor’ in Mangaluru on Friday, she said that KUIDFC has been mandated by the State government to initiate the development of the corridor.
She said the Manipal-Konaje region has a competitive advantage in knowledge and healthcare sectors. “We are capitalising on the strength of this region, and today’s event is one of the first exercises,” Somal said, adding that till now only matters related to industrial corridors were discussed.
She said the proposed ‘knowledge and health corridor’ will endeavour to achieve a conducive and enabling ecosystem for development and functioning of world-class academic and research institutions, manufacturing units and healthcare service providers.
It aims to facilitate investments from public and private sectors, including creation of physical and support infrastructure facilities, coupled with policy interventions.
The idea is to have a vision exercise where the matters related to knowledge, wellness, healthcare, tourism and education will be identified to be taken to the next level. The visioning exercise is likely to take around six months. The government can be approached on the aspirations of the region once the visioning exercise is done, she added.

MSEZ stares down barrel with steep hike in water tariff
Quote:
a recent move by the state government to hike water tariff for industrial use 100 times has come as a body blow to MSEZ. Tariff that was Rs 1,800/mcft was hiked to Rs 1.5-lakh/mcft and after protestations pared to Rs 1lakh/mcft.
|
एत्तिगॆ ज्वर बंदरॆ एम्मॆगॆ बरॆ हाकिदरंतॆ! Whether they hiked tariff across the state due to water scarcity in 'the parched city'? If so why don't the state have different rates in different districts as per water availability? That should help industries to move to regions with excess water. Current policy seems to be - if there is no water in 'the parched city' then don't allow industrialization of rest of Karnataka! Any way environmentalists are not worried about closing down of those chemical industries in Mangaluru including MRPL.

CII opens Mangaluru Chapter; will set up 6 panels to boost growth
Quote:
Region is the second-largest contributor to Karnataka's GDP, says CII-Karnataka Chairman Aman Choudhari
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has set up a chapter in Mangaluru.
Speaking at the launch of the Mangaluru chapter on Monday, K Prakash Rao, Chairman of the Mangaluru chapter, said CII is looking to set up six panels to drive growth in the region.
Terming Mangaluru as a manufacturing centre, he said the first panel would be on ‘manufacturing excellence and MSMEs’. The region should get new technologies, and CII would promote this for industries in and around Mangaluru, he said.
Other panels include ‘finance and taxation’, ‘industry-academia interaction’, ‘IT and start-ups’, ‘tourism’, and ‘infrastructure and connectivity’.
Stating that there are major issues on infrastructure and connectivity in the region, he said CII would take these issues up with the State and Central governments.
He said New Mangalore Port is an all-weather and better port. “We want to get better rail connectivity. We want to see whether the government is re-interested in the tunnel project to Bengaluru along the Western Ghat section,” he said.
Stating that land banks are the major concern for new industries coming in Mangaluru, Rao said some non-productive land such as the one earmarked for the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee in New Mangalore should be put into productive purposes such as setting up of a food processing park.
CII will support government initiatives of making coastal districts knowledge and wellness corridors as they are known for their health and education facilities, he said.
The Mangaluru chapter has 29 members as of now. Rao said CII is planning to take this up to 100 soon.
Aman Choudhari, Chairman of CII-Karnataka, said it was nice to launch the Mangaluru chapter in the 125th year of CII. Mangaluru, which is the second-largest contributor to GDP of Karnataka, has great potential, he said, adding that the full potential of the region is yet to be tapped.
