design a winnipeg bike rack

WINNIPEG cyclists will soon be able to park their bikes in style, with a series of artist-designed bicycle racks set to grace downtown this summer.

The Winnipeg Arts Council and the Downtown BIZ have issued a call for design proposals for the bike racks, which will be laser-cut from flat pieces of steel based on drawings from artists.

Up to three artists will be paid $1,500 each for their designs, which will be used as a model for 12 bike racks.

"We kind of liked the idea of exploring a project that had some functionality to it," said Tricia Wasney, manager of public art for the Winnipeg Arts Council. "So we thought about the kinds of things people use downtown."

Wasney said bike racks seemed like a natural choice, and a good way to encourage bicycle use.

The arts council is accepting design submissions until May 28, with the new bike racks expected to be put in place by July.

Wasney said while artistic experience is necessary, it's not restricted to formal training -- and metal-working skills aren't required.
