Why doesn't a 91 year old developer just take a well-deserved break and leave the destruction of the city to a younger, more capable generation?

It's not like he needs the money...

Maybe it's more about doing what you love. Look at Silverstein and Macklowe. Macklowe is sailing around the world, but still found time to put a major new skyscraper (Tower Fifth) in motion. He certainly didn't have to, but sometimes your passion is what keeps you going. And God bless them. I hope I'm still going at that age, and not leaving life to the younger generation.

Cafe Classico and Great American Health Bar argued in a Manhattan state court filing that their landlord is trying to unfairly oust them to make way for a “major” new building.

I'm sure the prospect of putting up a new building in NY or assisting with one is a driving factor for any developer who likes the game.

Yeah, I'm not sure I understand the age comment. Solow is a family development firm. His son, who is maybe 40, is the co-CEO.

I'm not surprised that a 91-year old who came of age during the destructive 60's is responsible for replacing more beautiful old buildings with pomo nonsense. It's a generational mindset as far as I'm concerned.

Somebody has to put these super talls up. As long as the design is decent, IDC if a 8 year old is developing it or Tony the Tiger, as long as it adds to the city, its a plus.

But I'm awaiting more JDS and Extell super talls. We need more of those! Also, the potential for the Penn Station district.

He's a capable man and he'll develop the style he likes. You should be admiring him that he's not wasting away in a home.

A younger developer does not guarantee amazing architecture either, so that's just ageist. There are plenty of awful younger developers with bad taste around.

Oh yeah, and money is not important to someone like him. He does it cause that's his MO. Architects also work until they die usually.. Haven't you heard of "the old man's profession"?

You would think that would go without saying.

You're making the mistake that younger age of a developer = good architecture. No, it doesn't work that way. Sorry. Any generation can ruin the city. It's not the age of the man, it's the taste of the man. And that man can be developing and designing great buildings.

Mysterious Solow project

Curious doings are afoot at two of Sheldon Solow’s West 57th Street properties between Fifth and Sixth avenues, a block he increasingly dominates with his signature 9 West tower and new developments on both sides of the street.

At four-story 35 W. 57th, which he’s owned for decades, he’s booted two small kosher restaurants he wanted to evict over supposed insurance violations. The Great American Health Bar and Café Classico are gone and boarded up.

The site might be too small for a large new building. But it’s adjacent to a big empty lot — once home to the Rizzoli bookstore — owned by a Vornado-Lefrak joint venture. Now that No. 35 is vacant, Solow could easily sell it to the JV to create an even larger development site.

Or it could hint at a future Solow buyout of Vornado and Lefrak so he could put up another giant tower of his own. Far-fetched, but stranger things have happened.

"Giant Tower", I like the sound of that.

Of course this all seems to be speculation but this would be a great location for another very tall building in Manhattan.

Yeah, it's all speculation. But "giant" isn't a word I would use. Tall, yes. Giant, no.

There's also the Hadassah assemblage directly behind on W. 58. So there are three separate assemblages. But the Hadassah assemblage will probably eventually be consolidated with one of the other assemblages.

There will likely eventually be two very tall, skinny towers on this block.

I guess there's also a possibility of a single, massive tower, combining all three assemblages.

Most likely we're looking at the same type of high end condos that made "billionaires row". There's time though to put the pieces in place for whatever gets built.

Some beautiful old buildings have come down on this site. I hope that something very nice rises here. This obviously is a very prime site.

Not sure, but the brown one is coming down. Whatever is going up here will go head to head with 41 W. 57th.
