It wasn't always a vacant lot. They tore this down to build it.

I don't have many details but apparently my company is bidding on the redevelopment of the Francis Cabrini row homes just north of Chicago Ave into a new mixed use neighborhood, with a goal to break ground within the next year or two. Like I said, I don't have many details (learned all this in a casual conversation) but I hadn't heard about this redevelopment plan before?

Those rowhomes are half-empty and half-renovated. Interesting to see them focus on a tear-down when the Cabrini area and CHA already have so much open land. There's a plan for the area west of Target on Division, there's a plan for the old Near North High School site, there's all the vacant blocks to the east of the rowhomes, and ParkSide is still not finished.

Yeah, still vacant. Same company (Wilmot) that built on the Carbit lot owns it and the now demolished 8 flat on the corner of Richmond. So we can expect more of the same.

It used to be one of my favorite blocks
For thirty years, I drove past there a couple of times a week to visit my folks.
Now that they're gone, I still drive by on the way to my factory in Hanson Park.

It just depresses me now.

So this is what's replacing the failed 312 Huron condo high-rise? Pretty underwhelming.

^ This is a very solid addition to that corner. It's not flashy but it's everything a good urban apartment building should be... no parking podiums, scale appropriate to the wide street, great massing. I wish we had a few of these at every major intersection and transit hub.

Amen. And it's affordable housing, which has even slimmer profit margins. Market-rate developers should take note.
