Texas runners can compete to the beat next year, when the Rock 'n' Roll series of marathons and half-marathons expands to San Antonio.

The series, launched 10 years ago in San Diego, is known for lining routes with cheerleaders and bands, which provide inspiration as runners pump past.

Paul Carrozza, owner of Austin running store RunTex, is working with Elite Racing Inc., which produces the races, to provide San Antonio with marathon training programs and smaller races leading up to the event.

"We want to try to improve the fitness quotient in the San Antonio demographic and create a spirit of fitness and wellness," Elite President Bruce Herring said.

This year, Men's Fitness magazine ranked San Antonio the second-fattest city in the country; Austin ranked the 21st fittest.

The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon San Antonio, set for Nov. 16, 2008, replaces the Marathon of the Americas, launched in 1975 as Las Colonias Marathon. Organizers looked to San Antonio rather than Austin because officials there expressed interest in hosting the marathon.

"And there's already a pretty nice race in Austin," Herring said, referring to the AT&T Austin Marathon, which is set for Feb. 17.

Herring said Austin will be included in recruiting efforts for 70 bands to work the San Antonio course. A headlining act will perform at a post-race party.

The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon San Diego drew 22,000 runners last year, making it one of the five biggest marathons in the country. Other Rock 'n' Roll races are held in Virginia Beach, Va.; Phoenix; San Jose, Calif.; and Nashville, Tenn. The races are considered sports tourism destinations, with more than half of the participants from outside the host city.

The San Antonio version is being billed as a beginner-friendly event that celebrates average runners. Still, it offers prize money and is expected to draw a world-class field. Race organizers anticipate 21,000 entries.

They haven't set the 26.2-mile course but say it will be a point-to-point route finishing adjacent to the Alamodome.

RunTex will organize four shorter races in San Antonio next spring and fall leading up to the marathon. No dates or distances have been set.
