The city took steps Wednesday, over the owner's objections, to save a vacant 1949 warehouse downtown that recently was the site of a fatal fire.

Members of the Historic and Design Review Commission supported a finding of historic significance for the original portion of the old O'Krent Building at 300 San Pedro Ave. The issue still must be considered by the Zoning Commission and the City Council.

On Jan. 17, a homeless man died in a fire in the rear of the structure. The building was appraised last year at just $100, while the land was valued at more than $1.5 million by the Bexar Appraisal District.

Charles Plunkett, president of Artistic Builders, who's working with the owner on plans for a new storage facility, said he's under pressure from police, the media and neighbors in the area to tear down the old flooring warehouse.
