Haha... no chance they'd take that! You'd have to sweeten the pot by throwing in Investors Group Field and the new exhibit at the zoo

Still, it does burn a little... Calgary gets him while we get the Scottsdale Country Club Gang.

I wouldn't mind Calgary giving up the contract on Rollin Stanley either. He would be a nice addition to the Winnipeg roster. Perhaps as the new CAO?

Really, anyone who understands that new suburbs are more expensive than infill would do.

Kind of funny that Winnipeg is so far down, Thunder Bay is in 21st spot and we're run by socialists at all levels...

Haven't had a chance to read through it yet, but this looks like an interesting read:

I know it's another wannabe big city thing, but why doesn't Winnipeg have rotating billboards? we have the huge LED screens popping up everywhere, so why no rotating ones?

I'm pretty sure I remember see in one or two around town in the past. I would think that the elements and weather here in Winnipeg would effect the performance of the rotating mechanisms.

There were at least a couple around town... as a youngster I was quite impressed by them. The biggest and most prominent rotating billboard that I can remember was the one on top of United Army Surplus on Portage, which advertised Champs Chicken for the better part of the 1980s.

I would imagine that those signs have been rendered obsolete by LED screens which are far more practical.

Now that you guys mention it, Winnipeg used to have many more interesting billboards back in the day as compared to now. These days it's mostly just the standard smallish billboards... when I was a kid there were a lot more of the huge showstoppers on top of buildings, etc., especially in and around downtown. I don't think you're allowed to place billboards on top of buildings anymore (existing ones are grandfathered)... it was regarded as excessive visual clutter. Personally, I think they gave the city a certain character.

thanks for the replies!

I spent a ton of time in Edmonton this summer and they have just as many LED signs as rotating signs.. their weather is just as extreme as Winnipeg's so I do not buy the weather excuse!

*edit* yes the stadiums have these signs, but why not the general advertising landscape?

LED signs can be changed by a central computer and present an unbroken image.

Rotating signs must be changed manually, and the image they display has vertical lines due to the gaps between rotating panels.

So which one do you think a profit-oriented business is going to put up?

The rotating signs in other cities are just left overs.

It was always interesting to see how long it would take the sign company to come out and fix the old rotating signs when they went out of sequence and had one strip from another ad in the wrong place.

Talking about the old style spectacular billboards, Boston Pizza wants to put one up on the abandoned supports on the Casa Loma building (650 Portage @ Sherbrook) but the city administration is against allowing them to go ahead and want to force the building owner to take the supports down.

Just figured I throw this comment out here.

I'm noticing more and more that Free Press commentors are completely ridiculous. Even more so than I've noticed in the past. No matter what the story is, it's NDP and tax hikes or crown corporations to blame. This morning, it's a story about spreading ashes. What does that have to do with NDP and tax hikes? Nothing.. There's no fees or anything. Just some regulations so water supplies, etc. don't get contaminated. Creating crown corporations to oversee spreading ashes? Seriously? No where in the story did it mention that. Just a bunch of trolls. Won't single any particular poster out.

This of course doesn't include the good posters from SSP who post on there.

With regards to illuminated signs and streetscapes, a couple come to mind.

One of the better looking ones was the Red Rose Tea sign that sat on top of the building at S/E Portage and Sherbrook. Was beautifully lit with cascading colors of red and green/blue much the same as the old foil square pack of Red Rose Orange Peko Tea. Looked exceptionally good with reflections off the roadway when it rained. Stood in the late 50-'s into the late 70's, maybe 80's.

Another sign was the Fort Garry Brewery one that used to shine over the water on the west side of the old Norwood Bridge just before the bend of the river beside the old wooden ski jump back in the 50's. Red block letters that would light one at a time, flash once and the pour a bottle of beer in a glass.

Portage Ave. street scape had a few good ones; South Seas restaurant on north side of Portage across from the Bay. Another one was Marti-Gras next to Gensers on N/S Portage at Donald.
