Portland has one murder (along with the two justified homicides) after a man was found dead inside of an apartment:

Way too early to say.

Look at Toronto, last year. It had 15 murders by the end of Feb. 2016, currently they are at 10.

Montreal, Gatineau and Quebec City were all at zero a year ago, now they are at 2, 3, and 6 respectively and Gatineau ended 2016 with zero, while Quebec City ended with 1. Montreal hit 30.

The point is that murder is randomly distributed in time and space and trying to draw a conclusion after two months is ludicrous.

It is too early to say, but Toronto has 11 to date.

Gatineau is actually at 1. It looked like two suspicious deaths could be murders this week but in the end it looks like two people who OD'd on drugs. No foul play.

Yes, thanks for the corrections. Actually, though, in 2016, the 16th murder took place on March 1 in Toronto.

And yes, Gatineau is at one. I don't know what I was thinking about. I knew that the other two had been declared an overdose.

Montreal had 23 last year, not 30.

Yeah. Another mistake. It was 30 in 2015. Sorry. But my point still stands. You cannot look at murders in January and February and extrapolate for the rest of the year.

Very true, anything can change at every given moment and you can't jump to conclusions so quickly, especially with only 2 months.

This is very true but far more so in cities with much lower crime/murder rates. Quebec City is a perfect example. It has had 6 murders so far but that was due to one nutcase killing 6 innocent people at a Mosque. With QC very low murder rate that number may only rise to 7 or 8 total by the end of the year. Conversely 6 murders in one day in violent Chicago would just be another day at the office.

Cities with low murder rates and/or small centres can be very deceptive because just one major event can grossly warp murder statistics but far, far less so larger and more violent ones. This is why smaller and safer cities can have huge swings in rates of up to 100% or more from one year to the next.
