Forks better than Rideau


I have lived in Ottawa since 1973 and have skated on the canal every winter. While my daughter attended university and medical school in Winnipeg from 2001-2007, my husband and I visited her a couple of times each year, always including one winter trip. So I had the pleasure of skating on the Assiniboine-Red river skateway each winter for six years. In my opinion, skating along the skateway in Winnipeg is more spectacular and enjoyable than skating along the Rideau Canal. Nothing along the Ottawa canal compares with The Forks. The natural scenery along much of the Winnipeg skateway trumps the urban silhouette along the Rideau Canal. Because the temperature is consistently colder in Winnipeg, there are no thaws and resulting closures, and skating conditions are consistently better than in Ottawa.

What a wonderful idea. Winnipeg may not be able to compete with other, larger Canadian cities in some categories, but outdoor ice-skating? This is a slam dunk for Winnipeg. Kudos to The Forks and the healthy ribbing between Winnipeg and our nation's capital. This is a great way for Winnipeg to promote a healthy pastime and our rivers.

Too many citizens don't appreciate living in a river city; our rivers have long been undervalued and underutilized. These natural urban features offer more than 200 kilometres of shoreline and are geographically situated so they are accessible to all Winnipeggers. Summer or winter, Winnipeg's beautiful rivers are free to enjoy with almost no negative impact to the natural habitat conditions. Aren't we fortunate that we don't have to paddle, skate, ski or snowshoe on a man-made canal like in Ottawa?

It's text anti-aliasing. I don't like it either. CRT vs LCD makes no difference when it comes to screenshots since it's the the data that is copied, not the display itself.

As for beaver tails, there are booths in Central/Eastern Canada and BC around different ski/skating areas/tourist traps.

Do people go out for extended periods when it's -10 out or whatever? It doesn't seem like pleasant skating weather.

^ -10 is pretty pleasant winter weather for Winnipeg... Any warmer and the streets start becoming a soupy mess. Beyond -20 it starts to get a little iffy...

-10 is wonderful weather to be outdoors. Even -20 or lower is fine, depending on the amount of wind. It's a lot easier to be outdoors in -10 and brilliant sunshine in Winnipeg than in Toronto when it's a gloomy grey -1 with slush everywhere (such as right now).

You'd be surprised how warm you can get skating, even at -10.

The Forks site is pretty impressive, the posted photos are good but because their are no skaters in the images, it loses the impact, when the hockey rinks and curling rinks are full along with a few hundred skaters, skiers, walkers etc. it's pretty impressive.

The two trails are very different. I of course prefer the more natural setting of the world's longest...WINNIPEG'S
