In the context, the University was making it's "argument" with it's choice of architecture, and was being criticized for that choice by alleging that the University was mediocre instead of directly criticizing the architectural "argument".

I understand what the direct, very literal interpretation of "ad hominem" means, linguistically, and how it's ordinarily used in discussions of debate or logic, but I really don't think it takes a wild-eyed madman to infer an extension of meaning to a situation where an institution is being personified and maligned rather that directly criticizing their argument.

But for future reference, I'll try to remember that you have a very traditionalist, inflexible manner of reasoning.

What’s going on in that last Fulton Market project? Are they adding floors?

Looks to be a gut-rehab, IIRC they have (failthfully) replaced the awning.

I've been collecting real estate data from a certain real estate website since late-ish 2017 per month per area of town. Here are the numbers for 2018, kind of preliminary, but I think the positions are probably fairly accurate at least. Mostly this is SFH and condo sales, but there's also some smaller multi unit buildings, land, parking spots (not many), etc sales. Overall for the year, I have a sum of 35,708 sales.

1. Near North Side: 2819 sales
2. Lakeview: 2335 sales
3. West Town: 1993 sales
4. Lincoln Park: 1678 sales
5. Near West Side: 1305 sales
6. Logan Square: 1131 sales
7. Uptown: 1116 sales
8. Edgewater: 1083 sales
9. The Loop: 856 sales
10. Austin: 848 sales
11. Near South Side: 772 sales
12. North Center: 766 sales
13. Portage Park: 745 sales
14. West Ridge: 696 sales
15. Irving Park: 681 sales
16. Lincoln Square: 635 sales
17. Dunning: 599 sales
18. Rogers Park: 547 sales
19. Auburn Gresham: 546 sales
20. Norwood Park: 541 sales
21. Belmont Cragin: 512 sales
22. Roseland: 500 sales
23. South Shore: 474 sales
24. Avondale: 470 sales
25. Chicago Lawn: 469 sales
26. Ashburn: 464 sales
27. Garfield Ridge: 452 sales
28. Albany Park: 424 sales
29. Humboldt Park: 415 sales
30. Greater Grand Crossing: 360 sales
31. Jefferson Park: 360 sales
32. Washington Heights: 353 sales
33. West Pullman: 344 sales
34. West Lawn: 320 sales
35. Morgan Park: 319 sales
36. Hyde Park: 315 sales
37. Chatham: 302 sales
38. Clearing: 301 sales
39. New City: 297 sales
40. West Englewood: 297 sales
41. Bridgeport: 293 sales
42. Grand Boulevard: 291 sales
43. North Lawndale: 289 sales
44. South Chicago: 287 sales
45. Forest Glen: 266 sales
46. Woodlawn: 265 sales
47. Beverly: 252 sales
48. Brighton Park: 244 sales
49. Little Village: 243 sales

57. Gage Park: 172 sales
58. West Garfield Park: 171 sales
59. East Side: 165 sales
60. Avalon Park: 163 sales
61. North Park: 161 sales
62. Douglas: 159 sales
63. O'Hare: 152 sales

The first and fourth quarters of 2018 were each way less in total sales than the second and third quarters. These are the areas which had its high quarter total for 4Q:

Edgewater, Greater Grand Crossing, New City, Brighton Park, Lower West Side, Avalon Park, Archer Heights, Pullman, Oakland, and Riverdale.

There were a handful of others that came very close to having 4Q as their high quarter of the year (Woodlawn, Little Village, East Garfield Park, Calumet Heights, Gage Park, Montclare, Hermosa, South Deering, Hegewisch, Washington Park, Armour Square, and Fuller Park). It will be interesting to see what some of these areas do in 2019.

I think this is new, at least the details - UIC Master Plan Update: 2018 Implementation Plan https://cppm.uic.edu/masterplan

There was an article yesterday in the Sun-Times -
https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/un...ear-west-side/

From the Sun-Times article - "Amiridis, who became chancellor in 2015, said if everything goes as expected, the university would begin breaking ground on four of the new projects within the next 18 months."

^ I'm glad they are planning so much construction.

I would really like to see them build out more of their surface parking lots

The executive summary map shows a lot of "new or expanded" parking garages. I'm not familiar with where their surface lots are today, but those new garages + all the new buildings is a good sign.

Edit: found this interesting part in the design guidelines from the broader plan (p. 58 of the pdf). Relevant to past discussions on Brutalism on this forum:

Quote:
8. HUMANIZING BRUTALIST BUILDINGS
The UIC campus has a particularly robust architectural heritage of Brutalist buildings. The University should seek to preserve and celebrate this history and character as much as possible, but also seek to enhance it to ensure these buildings meet the evolving needs of a modern university’s students, faculty, and staff.

a) Additions
Additions and significant exterior renovations to existing Brutalist buildings should:
• Contrast to the original structure by being lighter, brighter, and more transparent.
• Mitigate the interior-focused qualities of the original building while preserving a sense of its structural expression and form.
• Seek to emulate the successful aesthetic and interior quality (natural light and transparency) of the recladding of Grant, Douglas, and Lincoln Halls.

b) Lighting
Many Brutalist buildings on UIC’s campus have interesting forms and features with concrete and dark brick as the primary materials. To help add a sense of vibrancy and warmth to the campus experience, consider using architectural lighting and colored lighting to animate prominent buildings, facades, or building elements. Potential opportunities include lighting University Hall, the library, covered pedestrian passages or overhangs, and structural columns around the Central Quad

As a UIC student, this is very exciting! I hope this will revitalize Taylor Street with better restaurants and shops. I hope that stretch of empty land between Racine and Loomis will finally be filled in.

The new library/CHA building is filling in a spot on Taylor. Has anybody heard any news about the public housing museum?
