July 19 Cape Breton Post

Latest Asian restaurant opens in downtown Sydney

Naru Sushi at 216 Bentinck St opens Wednesday at 11am. It's the only restaurant in Sydney with exclusively Japanese cuisine. The article also mentions A Bite of Asia on Dorchester St which opened in February and serves mainly Chinese and Thai food.

Good news for Sydney

http://www.capebretonpost.com/busine...review-182709/

Between this development and the relocation of the Marconi NSCC Campus to the downtown core - this might help the city a bit!

Looks like it will be a beutiful project for that part of Downtown Sydney I'm gessing that the Hotel/Casino space are to the right, andthe 2 towers to the left are the apartments with the Library front left. I love that they decided to add a ramp for the Harbour Hopper as well, and it looks like they might add a Park next to what I asume is the library.

Personally I wish Moncton had a water front where projects similar to this would shine instead of looking on to a boggy river.

I think you've got the above all right! I am very interested in the revitalization of downtown Sydney. I have only been there a couple of times but it is an interesting (yet seemingly secluded) place.

Moncton would be much more appealing to the eye if it had the waterfront - I think that's why many people are more intrigued with Saint John - it's a much prettier setting.

Good news for Sydney and thanks for reviving a "dead" thread.

The river in Moncton isn't so bad. You get used to it. I find the tidal flow fascinating and the river isn't really ugly except at low tide. When I take walks along the riverfront trails, I tend to concentrate my interest on the marshlands and all the wildlife rather than the river itself.

I agree, the marshland area is pretty unique in it's own way. I lived in Riverview for a short period of time and also very shortly in Moncton in my early 20's.

As for the revitalization of downtown Sydney - I am excited to see what this does for the city and even more excited to see if it goes through.

I hope they will be able to get the staff to fill it. Seems to be more and more of an issue across the maritimes.

This could be a new project on the waterfront. There is a proposal to expand the Holiday Inn waterfront to double its size to include a relocation of the Sydney Casino.
Its ALL Good!
Thank You to theshark for the info!!

Nothing on that front yet! There is a potential announcement later in the month.
Noticed today that construction has started on a 22,000 sq. ft office building at the intersection of the 125 highway and Alexander street in Sydney. It will be anchored by the Nova Scotia Health Authority occupying 12,000 sq. ft.

That looks like it will be a great little campus there (not so little for a CC at that). Eyeballing it on the map, the location looks great too. The only slight concern is that there doesn't seem to be much student-focused facilities nearby (restaurants mainly) but that could come with time as that neighbourhood adjusts and grows. It should be a nice nexus to get some new density in the Sydney core.

Yes, one of the reasons for the relocation, at least the very early discussions of it many years ago, was to bring student's into a more central location where there are more services, as the current location adjacent to CBU is in the middle of nowhere. Edit - so although there aren't many services there now, there are still more than at the current location.

This should also serve to bring more stability to downtown, which will be a huge win for the city. If the Chernin project next to the Holiday Inn finally starts in addition to this, it should result in a significant transformation for the city, not to mention the skyline.

I'm very happy to see this moving forward, though part of me wishes I could be home to see the progress on these things.

Edit - just noticed an article mentioning tenders have been issued for formwork, concrete reinforcement, and concrete supply for three of the buildings involved in the NSCC project. Closing date Sep 29. Things should start visibly moving soon!

Dorchester Place

https://www.capebretonpost.com/busin...operty-471173/

Highlights:
SW Corner of George St and Dorchester St Intersection
5-7 Stories (5 of which probably residential)
7,000 sq.ft. footprint
Commercial-residential mixed use proposed
Newer developer (I'm assuming, as the name sounds familiar, but not from the circle of usual developers in the area)

Article is marked member-only, and is from July. Add this to the other two major developments proposed/under construction downtown, and I may not recognize it as the same city the next time I'm home.

That said, given the history of major proposals in the city, I'm not holding my breath. Would be nice to see a render though.

Thanks MonctonRad! I still don't know how active I can be, with two young kids now and all, but with the new job I should be able to lurk more than once a year, and post more than every few years now.
