It's interesting that the marketing document is so heavily pitched towards Chinese investors. Aside from that summit a few weeks ago -- which struck me as really only an introduction to the Chinese market -- Austin doesn't necessarily seem a magnet for their capital. Maybe the Trump folks are anticipating that Austin will take off as an investment destination . . . ?

Incorrect. It was not a "summit." It was actual developers pitching for actual Chinese money. In fact, several of those who pitched the Chinese investors received at least some investment capital toward their projects.

Chinese (and other international) investors are now looking at Tier 2 cities in which to invest - and Austin is a HOT Tier 2 city. This movement has been going on for more than a year now.

With domestic construction capital drying up at a very fast pace, developers are forced to look toward international partners in order to realize their projects. This is going to become the norm...at least for the near term.

Could this bring plans for the hotel to a halt?

Austin considers boycotting official use of Trump products

Quote:
AUSTIN (KXAN) — On the heels of President Donald Trump’s inauguration, Austin’s Human Rights Commission voted in favor — in an 8-2 vote — of a recommendation to city council that would ban the city from using any Trump products or services.

It will now be up to the city council to decide whether to adopt the recommended resolution.

If they did this strictly to prevent the endless picketing and protesting in front of a Trump product, then I get it. For any other reason, I don't. We are allowing communist to invest in our city by way of bank rolling some projects throughout the city aren't we?

It's a stupid idea because:

1) It's wasting city resources
2) Makes Austin look intolerant towards non-leftist views
3) The anti/pro Trump crowds already have their minds made up regarding Trump merchandise

"There are 26 major metropolitan areas in the US, and we're in five," Trump Hotels CEO Eric Danziger said at the Americas Lodging Investment Summit in Los Angeles, Bloomberg reported.

"I don't see any reason that we couldn't be in all of them eventually," he said, adding that the company is looking at Dallas, Seattle, Denver and San Francisco.
Quote:
The lower-priced Scion chain will be located in smaller cities, with the first due to open this year, Danziger said during the panel discussion.

There are 26? What are they drawing the dividing line between the Pittsburgh and Sacramento MSAs (2.4 to 2.3 million)? How f*ing arbitrary.

Yeah, that was curious to me as well. There's not a clear line of delineation at #26 if you rank by GDP or Avg Household Income, either.

The major metros they're in are, in descending size, New York City, Chicago, D.C., Miami, Vegas, and Honolulu. Clearly they're already focusing on the largest major cities and magnetic tourist destinations, so this list is just a continuation of that in that Dallas, San Francisco, Denver, and Seattle are all huge.

There have also been, at one point, plans for hotels in New Orleans and Phoenix. I can see both of those cities being resurrected, the former for tourism the latter for size (though Phoenix doesn't quite "sound" like a place a Trump Intl hotel would be, to me at least). As to others, Miami, Houston, Atlanta, Tampa, Orlando, San Diego, Boston, Austin, San Jose, and Nashville probably round out the list of anything possible for this expansion for the main brand.

From the article:

Quote:
The Trump Organization introduced the Scion brand last October in the final weeks of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, aiming to create a slightly less upscale brand that caters to a younger generation of travelers.

Some industry veterans are skeptical that a hotel developer would want to become involved with Trump, whose comments have spawned protests. “He’s going to piss people off,” said Laurence Geller, who owns several luxury hotels including The Conrad in Chicago and said he voted for Trump. “Why would a developer want that as part of his brand? Why would you take the risk?”

Announcing letters of intent with potential developers is just a press tool or press release kind of thing designed to gain some attention for the brand. Nobody is obligated to do anything with a letter of intent.
