I agree with you the deal with microsoft doesn't pass sniff test.

here is a place to start. there is no small amount of literature or anecdotes of people within industry leaking info about this app. this is a jumping off point https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comm...t_get/fmuko1m/

it's not that i think tiktok is doing something our tech companies aren't (i think they all do it) it's the fact that it is literally beholden to the CCP AND it's snooping as much/moreso than all our tech companies

BAE to build new North Austin campus and hire 700 which would double their local workforce to 1,400. They currently have 700 employees in East Austin.

I would be thrilled if they sold all the land they have in East Austin. It's about 120 acres.

The Statesman has the story...

https://www.statesman.com/business/2...mpus-in-austin

Quote:
Half of the site will be dedicated to manufacturing and the campus will include both classified and unclassified manufacturing and office space, as well as a cafe and gym, said Scott Hatch, site director of the new campus.

BAE chose Austin for the expansion because of the company’s deep roots here and because the U.S. Army’s Future Command is based here, said Scott Hatch, site director of the new campus.

That Futures Command is so much more of a big deal than I originally gave it credit for being. It’s going to drive a lot of similar business to town.

Also — Parmer’s really turning into quite a corridor.

This could have a similar effect for San Antonio and some positive job prospects for Austin as well

That'd be cool. Hopefully they get it!

Yep. If I have the location correct, BAE would be next the FC Austin training center and 3M.

The current Parmer Austin brochure has some new renderings of the entertainment options around the FC Austin center. I don't have a imgur account. So, if anyone wants to grab some some screenshots from the brochure, that would be great. See pages 4 and 5.

We've had a lot of good jobs news with Apple, Tesla, BAE Systems, Amazon, etc. But this is the first big negative that I know of. Smile Direct canceled their plans to build a manufacturing plant in Kyle and create 850 jobs.

The Texas Workforce Commission's WARN notices show the following layoffs for ytd 2020:

Austin 4,409
Cedar Park 102
Round Rock 398
Pflugerville 198
TOTAL: 5,107

The actuals are probably much larger. That's just the tally from companies that filed WARN notices with TWC. https://www.twc.texas.gov/businesses...n-warn-notices

The IBM layoff is missing. The large companies know who to avoid having to file WARN notices, they tend to layoff regularly with numbers just below those required for filing a warning, that is probably why you don't see the big companies here. IBM has had a layoff the last four years in the spring time and quite a few before that too.

Elon Musk’s Neuralink Looks to Expand Beyond Silicon Valley to Texas: The startup is recruiting engineers in Austin, Texas, home to a competitor and the site of a forthcoming Tesla plant.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...n-austin-texas

Not many jobs so far, but maybe sign of things to come in future.

"Job postings on the company’s website list four positions in Austin: three in engineering and one in accounting."

Nice find. It's good to see that Elon is focused on Texas for his ventures. But I don't think the Tesla HQ move is too much of a thing anymore.

We have a number of folks who cited this month as timing for that HQ announcement for a Tesla moving here.

Tik Tok sells to Oracle, so maybe Austin will get those jobs after all.

More layoffs being announced today. This will affect some Austin jobs - but, it's global in nature.

The number: ~5% of global workforce (~6,500).
