Philadelphia at 218, highest number at this same date for the past 13 years at least.
New York at 178, 25% higher than last year. (As of July 1)

Interesting how this thread has become completely abandoned as murder rates rise across the country.

Portland (Oregon) may have had four murders in a single 24-hour stretch (Thursday night of June 9 through Friday night of June 10, 2020). For a city that had 14 murders in all of 2013, that's a very stark decline in public safety.

Chicago has had 19 shootings, 4 fatal so far this weekend. It's Almost 3PM on Saturday there, a sign of a busy night to come.

I wonder if subsidized air conditioning would make a difference in Chicago... it's been very hot and humid lately and I imagine that people without air conditioning are probably extra irritable.

That's like a typical lunch hour Tuesday for some cities.

New York City is having a bit of a meltdown right now, with a baby shot dead and a 12-year-old shot and seriously wounded last night (the night of July 12/13, 2020):

https://newyork.cbslocal.com/2020/07...yn-playground/

These types of brazen shootings - and their frequency - and the fact that shooters are getting away with it - hasn't really been seen since the mid-90's.

Washington, DC had 102 murders as of July 13:

https://www.wusa9.com/article/news/c...d-0de22f87bfb8

Quote:
So far this year, 102 people have been killed in D.C., which is a 26% increase over the 81 lives cut short by this time in 2019.
That compares to 88 murders in all of 2012, the city's recent low.

It's a neat idea, IMO. I wonder how many people would need it?

You wouldn't need to put central air in everyone's apartment. Just install window units and buy those draft stoppers to put at the bottom of the door to the room. Then give them vouchers to spend on the increased utility cost.

If it cost $250 for a good quality window unit, $50 for a door draft stopper, some blackout curtains, and curtain rods from wal-mart, and $100 more a month to run it for the 3 hottest months of the year coming out to $600, then for $1.2 million you could get 2,000 households set up with at least one cooling room.

59 people shot in Chicago last weekend.

18 people shot Monday night into Tuesday (today) morning in Chicago, more than 1 person per hour in a period of 12 hours. Three of those pronounced dead, so far.

I think its obvious things are out of control and whatever current measures arent working. Why would the City not consider another approach by the feds or at least federal assistance?

The city does use federal assistance. The CPD works closely with the FBI, ATF, and DEA.

Here's a good example: https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/...ua4-story.html

My guess is that the immediate aftermath of this will lead to more bloodshed though, since that's what usually seems to happen when something happens to a gang leader.

St. Louis is having a rather ghastly year so far:

https://www.kob.com/national-news/3-...10648/?cat=600

Quote:
St. Louis has been among the nation's deadliest cities for many years, and 2020 is shaping up to be one of the worst on record, with at least 153 killings so far. The city had 194 homicides in all of 2019.
