Mostly water and buildings. 4th Avenue in Belltown has some trees, but the rest of downtown, not so much. My neighborhood has some trees, but they aren't all that great.

Ha! Well then, I'll have to get to work right away...winning the lottery. You know that if I was a skyscraper nerd in San Antonio with money, I'd totally invite the forum over for the views and booze.

The Broadway- Update

These photos were taken as of of yesterday showing the progress of the condo. It seems that one level or floor is started every week or so at this pace a topping out should begin in five months or so.

I think the crane will have to be raised several sections. So from the view of this photo, I would say another 10-20 percent higher than it currently stands.
By the way, why are there no "diagrams" of this building in the Diagrams section of this website? This building should clear 225-250 feet easy.

The top of the crane looks like its about level with the 14-story tower on New Braunfels. It'll have to be raised once they get to the 10th or 11th floor. I'm not sure we've ever seen 3D renderings of this building (if somebody knows of any, please post them!), so that may explain why there's no diagrams.

Thanks for the pics, though! Be sure to post them in the SA construction update thread under "City Compilations".

I wonder if they're going to shrink it anymore. It was 24, now they're just going for 20.

You can't shrink it after construction begins.

Sure you can, that's why they were all freaked out in Austin over those rumors that the Austonian isn't going to go all the way up to 56 floors.

Thanks for the updates. Are those your photos, marcus?

Oh, they can shrink them alright, or enlarge them. As long as they plan for it in the structural engineering process, they can do it. There's the Blue Cross Blue Shield office building in Chicago. They're adding 25 floors to the existing 33-story building. It'll go from about 400 feet to 743 feet. The building had been structurally engineered so that more floors could be added later.

Here's the construction thread on it. They've already started.

Well, you learn something new every day.

I'm not a engineer and I don't play one on TV, though I've tried, so my comment was based on my own assumption. I always thought once physical construction began, any changes couldn't be done because it would compromise the intellectual structure of the building.

I see I was incorrect.

Why did they shorten it from 24 floors in the first place? '09er NIMBYs?

I believe the crane at the Broadway is a self-assembling tower crane so they can lift it to the proper height when they need to. It usually take a few guys and a couple of hours to lift it but I've seen cranes get raised an extra 100 feet in a day.
kinda like this.
that is where the slewing unit(tower) is detached from the mast(upper arm and pivot.)
then hydraulic lifts raise the slewing unit up twenty feet so a new section can fit.

then they just push it in there, assemble it and repeat the process.

found these pics at How Stuff Works.

We get to see that all the time here in Seattle-- I'm always down in the Denny Triangle looking at the stuff north of the Retail District getting built... crane piece comes up, guys scurry over it like mice, crane raises, ta-da!
