Lord it's been a while since this threat has been updated. I think the forumers are so unused to so much activity they're not accustomed to updating regularly.

Anyways, VIA the BJCC's master plan, there probably won't be a dome constructed (I'll speak more about Legion Field below). Legacy Arena will be overhauled (capacity 17,000+) and the BJCC board plans to construct an open air stadium with a ~50,000 capacity stadium to house the city's new USL team, UAB football, Magic City Classic, and Birmingham Bowl.

There is MASSIVE focus on developing the 4 blocks that the BJCC set aside for a stadium. Meyor-elect is a Progressive and supports a new stadium, but he doesn't seem to be in favor of a dome... most likely an appropriately sized open-air stadium.

In the end, it would render Legion Field obsolete. It is a historical shame... it's not even designated a historical landmark. The problem is its location! If Legion Field were closer to downtown, who knows the level of football proclivity that would take shape at it...

What ever happens, I will probably cry when the Old Grey Lady goes down... I don't see the city maintaining it after it has constructed a new stadium in downtown.

And BTW, it is completely ridiculous that Atlanta is demolishing the Georgia Dome considering the stadium's youth. Any city the size of Birmingham, Louisville, Memphis, or Raleigh would pay any amount to bring it to their town.

Legion Field

The real problem regarding Legion Field is the fact that it has been neglected almost as badly as the neighborhood around it. Both can be redeveloped and repurposed.

Forty plus years ago, Indianapolis decided it would become the amateur sports capital of the world. It developed a strategy, then worked the strategy. Not only was it successful in reaching its goal, but its efforts helped prepare the city to recruit professional teams as well. Birmingham has no such strategy or even a vision. We have to have more than whatever happens to be inside Gene Hallman’s or the Mayor’s head. Our tradition has been to build first and plan later, if ever. Hopefully this will change with the City’s new leadership.

Historic Smithfield is as convenient to Downtown as Avondale and Norwood. A little TLC and vision could position it well to be the next “it” neighborhood. That can become one of the tangible legacies of the World Games.

It appears the Amtrak portion of the intermodal center may open as early as next week (still no date for the Greyhound portion). Anyone been there, at all? I’ve seen very scant photos, but it seems quite nice.

I have not yet entered the station, but from the outside, it looks like a modern and legit, multi-storied train station. There are still barriers and fences to prevent entry to the entire facility. Soon, all of the construction will be complete. Just glancing from 19th St, it is easy to see the modern waiting area with digital displays that will show wait times. The waiting area is large and expansive, a great improvement from the former train station. The street-scaping is quite appropriate... decorative pavers and bollards front a station that makes a statement that this facility isn't meant for one or two trains a day.

Reposting TimCity's post. Great news. The fact that investors are showing interest in this kind of property indicates that more investors are looking for prominent downtown buildings to either redevelop or invest in.

The Brown Marx Building - the last empty building in the "heaviest corner on Earth" - could soon be developed into a hotel.

Tupelo Hotels 1031 Acquisition II LLC purchased the building at the corner of 1st Avenue North and 20th Street North in downtown Birmingham from Hughes Capital Partners late last year for $3.7 million, public records show. The company also bought the Allright Parking Deck at 1901 First Ave. N. for $1.6 million.

According to information from the city of Birmingham, the purchaser plans to develop the property as a hotel.

Tupelo Hotels 1031 Acquisition II LLC shares the same address as Ascent Hospitality, which developed the Elyton Hotel in the adjacent historic Empire Building. Ascent is also developing a limited service Marriott hotel with 120 rooms in the former Alagasco headquarters building.

I think this serves as a statement that downtown Birmingham's abandoned buildings are not all lost to the past.

Honestly, I'd love to live in one of those planned lofts (if I could afford it). I love hearing the trains at night, and the passing traffic lulls me to sleep.

Greyhound is set to open February 23rd and they are leaving a nice piece of property down by City Hall. Wonder what will happen to it?

Powell Avenue Steam Plant project is still a go. They were busy stabilizing the building and smokestacks.
