Yeah, I think the wife and I are headed to Mexico City and Zihuatanejo for a few weeks this Summer. We'll wait a bit to make sure the vaccine data still looks good against mutant strains, but I wanna go somewhere.

There is a lot of metal that used to go to Europe and Asia that needs to find homes. I expect to see a lot of temporary flights to LATAM.

April 22nd, the west runway will reopen as 18R/36L. The East runway will close at that time and reopen when they repaint it to 18L/36R.

post COVID how do you guys see us ranking as far as airport traffic goes? We were (I think) 32nd pre COVID.

I bet we bump a few spots in the next 12-24 months to the mid 20s.

Why do you think that? It's all leisure travel. I'm not sure Austin economic recovery will push it that much since no one is really traveling for business.

More wealth in Austin these days. Consumers with money to spend will inevitably travel when this is over.

I bet we rebound faster than most cities our size!

We probably already lead airports in similar small/mid size metros. I just don't see us climbing until business travel picks up again.

Austin airport to build new cargo facility to keep up with demand for e-commerce

By Kathryn Hardison – Staff Writer, Austin Business Journal

https://www.bizjournals.com/austin/n...expansion.html

"This has put demand on the airport’s existing infrastructure, signaling to officials that it's time to move forward with plans to build an additional 90,000-square-foot facility, said Mookie Patel, chief of business and finance for the airport."

“We’ve accelerated (plans) because of the pandemic," Patel said. “Cargo activity has really grown here. And with Austin's continuous in-migration and growth projections, these cargo airlines are not letting go of that supply chain that they've solidified, so the demand for these facilities continues to grow."

Another interesting quote from the article, re: the expansion:

Quote:
“You'll see this summer a huge wave of leisure customers coming through the airport, and we've seen a huge increase in our airline announcements more recently,” Patel said. “But is it sustainable past Labor Day? We don't know. And so we are prepared to talk about the larger (capital improvement plan), but we're hesitant to put anything out there yet because we want to see if this growth is sustainable into the last quarter of the year.”

Patel said the airport typically sees an influx of business travel near the end of the year, but it’s hard to know what that activity will look like at this point.

“I think we'll come back to business travel, but there's a lot of pessimistic economists that believe it's going to take us four years to recover,” he said.
This seems exceptionally conservative to me. I mean -- so conservative as to be out of step with general business sentiment. There's definitely a risk that things may not fully recover by the end of the year, but the expansion is something that needs to be forward looking by several years, not by several quarters.

More than a little baffling.

Yes. Sorry. It was the maiden outbound voyage for the Hawaiian AUS-HNL route.
