Quick City Overview: Belfast, Northern Ireland

City: Glasgow
District: Glasgow
Place: Quick City Overview

Although Belfast is known for its history of violence during the war between the two Irlandes, its great golden age was during the 19th Century, during the Industrial Revolution. In those times, it was one of the busiest ports in the British Isles, dedicated to the textile trade and the export of tobacco. The other relevant industry that it had was the construction of ships, having the largest shipyard in the world (the "Harland & Wolff"), where the Titanic was designed and assembled. In order to commemorate it, a new museum was built, placed in a modern building who's the icon of the rebirth of the city after the war.

Lol, I'll tell you what, I don't really know how or why, sometimes some things hit my brain and remain stuck in there, so I can remember we already had one.
It was by the guy with Sean Connery and "Red October standing by" on his profile...
Ah yeah, I found him! Hi, LSyd.

His thread was different, showing some regular neighborhoods with some political street art, while EMArg would rather showcase landmarks and official districts, it seems.

I think LSyd's thread had stroken me because of Ireland's tortured history and what we've heard about it over here.
Also, I have a cousin that spent a couple of years over there for her job.

They're doing much much better today, eh, growing better off. And they should worship the European Union for that.

In regards to that, I've spoken about that bloody past before with some irish people I've met when I was in Europe and their vision of the region, in general, is that there's still tension between both countries but they really wish to become one nation. There even was a terrorist attack in Belfast (or Dublin, I can't remember) a few months ago, related to some new movement connected with IRA. People from other countries often asked me if it wasn't dangerous to go there, specially when crossing the border. Appart from a few details who clearly shows the influence of the EU or the UK, it's hard to tell the difference. The area, overall, is pretty developed and peaceful now.

Belfast City Hall

City: Belfast
District: Belfast
Place: City Hall.

Escaping from the usual red english brick facades, the Belfast City Hall was designed in neo-baroque style. With reconstructed interiors just after the german bombings of the WWII, it's widely used by the people of the city during the summer, especially in the gardens who surround the place. Nowadays, it functions as the indirect starting point of the commercial area of the city. Interestingly, the Belfast City Hall also has a twin palace in the city of Durban, South Africa.

Thanks for the photos - very much appreciated. It's an area I never thought much about until recently. I had always thought (and was told) that my surname was of Scottish origin. But after some genealogical research and new family connections (DNA) it turns out my paternal grandparents' family came to Canada from County Down, specifically between Belfast and Bangor. This coincided with the potato famine in the 1840s.

I see that these tests are very popular in the northern hemisphere. Already heard a lot of friends doing it . I was thinking in doing one myself, as I'm interested in one of my grandparents, who had blonde hair and blue eyes, which is a little weird, as he was from Canary Islands. It's been said in the family that we may have a small percentage of celtic blood, which it would be really cool.

Dublin: Quick City Overview

City: Dublin
Province: Leinster
Place: Quick City Overview

Mixed with older celtic roots, the city of Dublin was founded by the vikings about 1000 years ago. From those times, It's the most influential city in the region, which was also the seat of England until the beginning of the 20th century, when the Irish War of Independence broke out. During the 19th Century, Dublin lost its privileged place and began to compete with Belfast, the current capital of Northern Ireland. Added to the destruction during the independence, the city fell into a decline that lasted several decades and from which it managed to reborn in the second half of the 20th Century, in an economic and urban boom that continues to this day, which interestingly turned to be an example to follow for many countries nowadays. Currently, Dublin is recognized for its brewing industry, especially for the Guinness Storehouse and the famous Temple Bar.
