BANGKOK | Grand Rama 9 | 2,018 FT | 125 FLOORS

125-floor ‘super tower’ to be built in Thailand

Quote:
BANGKOK – Higher than a bird, almost as high as some planes. It’s Super Tower. And it’s coming to Bangkok.

A Thai property developer has announced plans to build a skyscraper in the Thai capital that will be among the 10 tallest buildings in the world when it is completed in 2019.

The 125-floor tower will rise 615 metres (2,018 feet) and include a luxury hotel, offices and an observation deck with panoramic views of the Thai capital, developer Grand Canal Land Public Company Ltd. said in a statement.

According to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, which maintains a database of the tallest skyscrapers, the Bangkok “Super Tower” will be the world’s ninth tallest if it is built on schedule. It would be the second tallest if built today.

The developer intends the tower as the centre of a new business, shopping and residential district in Bangkok costing 100 billion baht ($3.1 billion).

The ambitious plans, which were announced Tuesday, are a vote of confidence in the Thai economy, which has lost much of its dynamism and struggled to grow during several years of political strife.

The military seized power from the elected government on May 22, the 12th coup in Thailand since the end of its absolute monarchy in 1932. Martial law remains in place but business and daily life continues as normal.

The tallest building in the world is currently Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, which has 163 floors and is 828 metres (2,717 feet) high.

Bangkok will soon be home to the third tallest building in the world. Leading Thai property developer Grand Canal Land Public Company (G Land) recently broke ground on the Rama IX Super Tower project, a 125-story skyscraper measuring over 2,000 feet tall. Designed by Architects 49 Ltd., the $550 million LEED Platinum-seeking building will be developed as part of the Grand Rama 9, the city’s new central business district.

The Grand Rama 9 is poised to become one of Bangkok’s most important economic hubs upon completion and will be easily accessible by mass transit. The mixed-use Super Tower will serve as the crowning centerpiece of the development and will comprise premium office spaces, a six-star hotel with 260 rooms, and an observation desk that will boast stunning panoramic views of Bangkok. “This skyscraper is going to be the new landmark of Thailand, a world-class attraction that everyone must visit at least once in their lifetime,” says Yotin Boondicharern, chairman of G Land in a press release with PR Newswire.

I suspect this is another prick waving tower. But, this is nothing new in Asia. Although lets not be discouraged, there happens to be a strong demand for these supertalls in East Asia. The vacancy rate for some is high, but others, do get filled. If the Kingdom Tower is rising, this will most likely rise like the numerous East Asian supertalls.

All phallic/priapic references and supply/demand arguments aside, this tower is sensational.

That said, I get almost clinically nauseated when I see/hear stories of one American city after another looking for something like this and can actually pull it off either get cold feet at the eleventh hour when offered the opportunity, or not even take the dare at all.

Any perceived notion--such as mine--that architecture critics here in the States look somewhat more than askance at most examples of Asian supertall design--and are essentially given carte blanche for begging the question on their assertions--doesn't do us any favors.

In short, just as the necessity for a cross-Long Island Sound tunnel/bridge will have to come to fruition inevitably despite NIMBY yammering (do a Wiki on NY route 135) or continued interstate bickering, such will be the case for a 2000(>)'-er in a major American metro area.

And when it does (I don't care where, although the Apple would most likely be ready to host one), I wanna see something that'll give this tower some drop-dead serious competition.
