I think 70% of the project will be gardens and parks

I doubt that such sprawling green spaces would be sustainable in a habitat that does not naturally support much vegetation. Palms should do just fine but I don't see how on earth they can maintain hundreds of acres of green lawns without using enormous amounts of water and energy in the process.

This would easily take about 75 years and hundreds of BILLIONS of dollars to build.

You've GOT to be SHITTING me.

*SIGH*

....at this rate, New York City would have to bulldoze the better part of either Nassau County or Northern New Jersey and build this, just to compete.

Not massively enlightening on progress, but good to see it hasn't been canned yet!

Read somewhere else they're planning on starting in 2009... anyone else know any more?

This is getting ridiculous. How high do you guys think all this would drive up the price of steel, leading to cancellations of U.S. projects due to high costs?

This has got to be BY FAR the best thing that could ever have possibly happened to Dubai and as far as I can tell IT'S STILL GOING TO BE BUILT!
One of the main reasons I like it so much is how it is chock full of ancient sacred geometry!

BTW for all of you who think it's going to be uber expensive, I got these off of Eric Kuhne's website CivicArts.com:
Quote:
Project facts

80 sq km Size of the project

$54.4 bn Cost of the project

Developer Dubai Properties, part of Dubai Holding

Architect Civic Arts/Eric R Kuhne and Associates

Similar ventures:

Kuwait’s forthcoming City of Silk, which will house nature reservations including a desert reserve

Omagine, a $1.6 billion theme park and residential complex made up of seven pearl-shaped structures to be built on a stretch of beach 20 kilometres outside Muscat
