Winnipeg: Creative Ideas for Parcel Four at the Forks

Creative Ideas start here:

We know that the City can't come up with an idea that appeases the people of Winnipeg, so the common people should take the reins in their hand and tell the City what they would like to see placed on the Parcel Four site.

So what's your pleasure people? Do we want a Park? A multi-use building? Residential development? Commercial enterprise? ...or what. You tell the City.

definitely housing units and a boutique hotel or something.

I'm more in the housing unit/mixed retail crowd for that area though.

Hotel could work if it complemented the museum well. But I feel there are enough hotels, within 5-10 min walking distance, in that area (from the Fairmont to Ft Garry to the Forks)

Could the Railway Museum presently located at the Union Station be incorporated into a retail atmosphere that would reflect that at one time this property was a 'meeting place' since the beginning. The exterior facade could be railway or transportation oriented, and the interior could be the old town look (pick what ever era you want) and the shops would reflect that era. An outside water feature with canoes, splash park in summer, skating, hockey, broom ball, curling in winter, could all connect in some way. Hell, transit could even put an old street car there too.

At least its a start.

I'd want residential similar to what TV was suggesting.

I'd also like to see that surface lot across York developed into a true upscale hotel and another free parkade like the forks has by the skate park.

And I know I've said this already in other posts, but I'd reallllly like to see rapid transit go along the rail line there. it'd be nice if it could even be extended as part of phase II.

Something like Federation Square in Melbourne would be ideal, keepingparcel 4 open to the public.

Anything but a just a park.

The last thing that Winnipeg needs is another chunk of green space with no real purpose.

A mixed use (office/hotel/retail/residential) building would be great for the area and if designed properly should be able to incorporate public outdoor spaces with fountains, benches and landscaped areas for people to relax in.

i think the last thing downtown needs is more over-extended office space so that should be nipped in the bud. residential and some shops with a nice plaza would be ideal IMO.

Over extended office space?

A well designed building has the potential to attract an anchor tenant out of the burbs in the way that Stantec is moving into Centrepoint.

I was under the impression that Winnipeg's downtown office space was stretched too thin as it is. From the sounds of it, we really don't need more office space. And to some extend we really don't need any more retail, though any residential development should come hand in hand with multiple ground floor retail. Continuing the style of Waterfront would be fine by me, although with a little more oomph, as the development would be located next to a world class facility.

I was thinking of something else as well. There are two major problems with retail downtown.

1) Not enough population living downtown to support major outlets.

2) No efficient alternatives to driving for those coming in from exterior neighbourhoods. Really why would anyone go to the bay downtown, when to do so they have to drive farther and pay 10.00 for parking when there is one right around the corner, and parking is free. Either provide free parking for shoppers, or provide an efficient form of alternative transportation to outlying neighbourhoods.

Also something has to be provided that would not be possible at a suburban shopping centre, I don't know what, but some sort of Downtown Shopping incentive.

Local businesses are a start. Somehow, not just the owners of those business, but also the general population that MUST support them, and promote them. To start that off, definitely some mixed used development, whether it be condos, apartments, or both, and of course storefronts and restaurants below the residential complexes.

So far, only the Downtown Spirit, and 6 other transit routes that go around this part of The Forks for mass transit access. In the future, if rapid transit goes on by the nearby tracks, this would be a perfect place to have a broad coverage to the rest of the city from this point.

With that in mind, with careful planning, a mixed use area with some sort of plaza connecting to what could be a BRT/LRT corridor by the Union Station tracks would be quite impressive.

i'd rather the city put the money into its already existing parks to do more flower beds and land scaping such as micheal jaun park witch has the citys only community center in a park along the river cause the last time i checked most of our parks are just trees and grass
