The more I read these Bears statements the less faith I have that they are going to put forth anything remotely sensible. The idea of tearing down Soldier Field to all but the studs and the colonnades would be a colossal waste of resources as well as be environmentally irresponsible.
Even though the west side of the Soldier Field makeover was awkward and ill-thought-out, the east side of the Soldier Field with the United Club and Skyboxes is arguably well-designed with premium features that could be reoriented to other civic uses be it a scaled-down soccer stadium or a large outdoor music amphitheater to replace Northerly Island.
A lot could be improved with Soldier Field just by tearing down the 400 Level on the West side, which would get rid of the UFO effect, and perhaps the removal of the 300 level on the north and south ends that could open up vistas to the city skyline and Field Museum. The removal of those upper seats would still allow for a capacity of 20-30k.
The above would certainly be an improvement over the hair-brained idea of leaving the Colonades while tearing the outer shell of Soldier Field and then laying Kentucky blue grass community soccer fields over a parking garage. The promised kids' soccer fields would likely be more expensive than any kids' soccer fields elsewhere by a factor of 100. Not to mention, the city will be asked to come back in 30 years and reinforce the underground garages for untold millions. Meanwhile, Bears fans would likely have even less tailgating than allowed currently in the process.
