Some sort of excavation going on in the NW corner of the property today.

I'm not sure if there was a fuel farm for the fleet there, so they might be removing an underground storage tank.

The Portland City Council took a major step forward Wednesday in setting the course for the Broadway Corridor redevelopment project, voting unanimously to approve an agreement between the city and project developer, a funding and financing plan and a historic community benefits agreement to guide the project.

Could it have anything to do with the fact that most companies have been affected in some way by the pandemic at hand?

In response to your question, this is from the Broadway Corridor website:

When does demolition start and how long will it take?

The vehicle maintenance facility, located on the northern edge of the property, will be demolished during summer 2020. Work will begin in early July and is anticipated to be complete in early October. The larger mail processing facility will be demolished beginning in mid-2021 and is anticipated to be complete in mid-2022. The existing parking structure will remain for several years and will ultimately be demolished prior to later phases of development.

One issue is that they need to relocate the USPS retail operation before they can demolish the main structure. Last I heard the plan was to move the retail facility into the ground floor of the existing parking garage, which would then allow the main building to be demolished. Ultimately the USPS retail will go in the ground floor of one of the new buildings.

There have also been various actions at city council in recent months related to streets and infrastructure.

So is the demolition thats suppose to start in beginning 2021 delayed?

I'm confused? We didn't just need to accommodate a new sorting facility on a former public(?) golf course:

https://www.postal-reporter.com/blog...rtland-oregon/,

But we also need to provide them a new retail space in the Pearl? (Which honestly shouldn't be too hard in this COVID era)

I'm just trying to understand.

Yeah, part of the deal was providing them with new retail space. I gather it's a little trickier than just finding any vacant retail space, because they have specific loading needs and also want a certain amount of parking for customers (which isn't common with Pearl District retail).

Thanks, that's an interesting deal they've worked out.

With such a central location their previous location was, I’m sure their objective was to milk as much favorable deals for their benefit

I cycled past the old Post Office today, and noticed that the retail operations have now moved into the ground floor of the existing parking garage at the southwest corner of the site. That will allow the demolition of the main building to go ahead. (Eventually the retail operations will move to the ground floor of a new building, similar to the shop at First and Main).

I'm not sure I see what the hurry is ... We've got a whole neighborhood of high-end apartments still rising in Slabtown. I'm not in a rush to see a glut of luxury apartments in the city.

I'd like to see the infrastructure built, street grid restored, some new architecture, and perhaps a few new companies come into the region. This isn't supposed to a high-end housing development. I'm sure some percentage of new housing will also be subsidized affordable housing, so that's good as well. None of that can begin until the site is cleared.
