Yes - next to the Circle Interchange - where the school gets it's name.

The previous name, which has not been in use since 1982

UICC - University of Illinois at Chicago Circle .

Only renamed in the minds of the administration which has a pathological case of inferiority when comparing themselves to the (larger) ag school downstate.

Does anyone know where the funding for this UIC project is coming from? UIC is still a state institution and at last check this state is dead broke. This seems exactly the type of thing we need to be putting on hold until better we are in a better financial situation. If a deep pocketed donor is putting their name on it than disregard rant.

Harry, can't tell if you're joking or not..
In the four years I spent as an undergrad there in the 90s, as well as subsequent interaction with faculty, staff and administration as clients, not one.single.person. has ever EVER referred to it as 'Circle'. Not certain why some people insist on beating that drum; it's frankly strange, and feels like 'old skool Chicago' being anathema to change of any kind. Even older, fellow architects who attended school there prior to 1982 refer to it as 'UIC.' Please stop.

Are you sure? The “Circle campus” is a metaphorical design inspiration, and its origins are not specific to a freeway interchange, but the Congress plaza. I recall seeing sketches on how the circle manifested itself in the architecture and layout of the campus over time. It’s official name was Circle Campus

Mayor Emanuel Announces City Council Approval of Major Building Code Modernization to Enable Safer, More Affordable, Sustainable and Innovative Construction

City Council today voted to adopt a major update to the Chicago Building Code that will better align the city’s construction requirements with up-to-date model codes and national standards. The new code represents the first comprehensive revisions to the building code in 70 years and will make construction in Chicago more affordable by expanding options to design and build with a wider range of materials and technologies. Chicago is now among the first major jurisdictions in the U.S. to adopt the 2018 International Building Code.

The devil’s in the details with that IBC... yes we will “have” IBC but there will be a whole suite of Chicago-specific amendments tacked on. It’s not clear yet what those amendments will be specifically.

The current Chicago code is stricter in some ways than IBC and more lenient in other ways, so I expect that to continue and probably a lot of the city’s code quirks will be retained since they are kludges designed to reconcile modern codes with Chicago’s historic building stock.

I hope not..those are the scourge of may cities and are getting panned by the urban observers as on trend, bad architecture. and they are usually built with either colorful panels that fade quickly or pomo bullshit fake historical fronts. Leave those for the 3rd/4th tier cities. And Chicago will never allow sticks thankfully bc of the fire code.

This.

Expect more “wallpaper” looking buildings. Taller woodframe with high performance (but cheap looking) cladding. But yeah, Chicago can overlay additional amendments and revisions for fire resistant construction
