It wasn’t just some random gallivanting. A lot of labour disputes in North America revolved around streetcar labour issues. For example, the streetcar strike of 1906 in Winnipeg was in many ways even more violent and resulted in the destruction of several streetcars. In 1919 they were using scab labour to run the streetcars, which is why they were an obvious point of attack for the strikers. The streetcar system in Winnipeg was privately owned.

Highly interesting. The building that everyone insists never existed ... caught on tape. What became of it?

Was either in West St. Paul or right on the border with Wpg. Last use was an Alouette snowmobile dealership. I used to go in to ogle the snowmobiles.

Probably been posted before, but the mix of pedestrian, cycling, horse drawn buggy, car and streetcar is kind of mind bending. Plus the electric lights. Date is 1912.

The city was able to figure out strands of lights in 1912 but can't get it right in 2019 -- thinking about the sad strand of lights over Osborne at Stradbrook, which has maybe three lights still working and the rest of the strand burnt out

I find there is little pride taken in the City by a lot of folks. They simply don't give a shit. Which is really sad.

The old Fire Hall No. 1, located on what is now Old Market Square. This photo was taken in early 1967, just before it was demolished.

^ Old Market Square is nice, but geez what a treasure that firehall would have been. It looks like a bigger version of the one on Maple St.

Which is a twin of the one on Talbot. And not really that far away. I assume they were the cookie cutter fire halls of the day. These days, they still build cookie cutter. But are not as cool.

I have never seen that image or picture before! This is why we NEED strong heritage protections. I would take that over old market square any day!

But OMS is a great gathering place downtown for summer festivals in the exchange (with the Fringe and others being extremely successful).

This thread is fascinating.

What building was the ornate almost Ukrainian church looking structure (from the air anyway) in the photo on the left?

Apparently it had major structural issues that could not be overcome. So it was torn down.

I wonder how much of that rumour is true and how much was just propaganda to have it torn down.

It's built right beside an old creek bed and its predecessor actually almost collapsed into the street, so its probably more than propaganda. Also, somewhere in the COW photo archives there's a bunch of pictures of the attic interior that looks like there was some serious structural MacGyvering going on.

This talks about the first city hall being structurally unsound. It says the building pictured in this thread was torn down due to pressure to re-develop.

So there you go.

I wish they had held off on replacing City Hall until after Unicity so that we could have gotten a more impressive replacement out of the deal. We basically have a City Hall designed for a municipality with half the population of Unicity Winnipeg.
