A little San Antonio urban art...

Hi everyone. I rarely post here anymore, but I still lurk and read. Thought I'd share a recent project I finished-- a panoramic sketch of S.A. in my folding Moleskine sketchbook. It's actually four separate panos, all of which I drew on site in downtown San Antonio. The first is a 180 degree sketch of Houston Street just north of Alamo Plaza. The second pano is of Navarro Street and the Nix Hospital. The third is on Commerce Street and features the Aztec Theater. The fourth pano is only 90 degrees (I ran out of room) and was done in front of the old San Antonio Courthouse.

Here's the full pano (scroll>>>)

Here it is split into 3 sections so you can see it all together.

And here are some details:

Those are great, Boquillas. The detail is amazing. So you sit there and draw it, not taking photos to help?

Thanks everyone!

Kevin- yup, I sit on the street (well, sidewalk) with a folding stool and draw every part of it from observation. I never use a photo reference for my sketches.

That's awesome. How long does it usually take per image? It's amazing that you're able to see each section as a panorama and then able to draw it so that it's lined up. Making a panorama with a photograph is hard enough, trying to draw it is something else.

Thanks again! Kevin-- I can't give any specific time estimates per portion of the image, but the thing probably took somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 hours, spread out over 3 months. (I was working full time as well, and doing other drawings.)

Thanks Tex-- just saw that you posted here and in the Texas forum, so I'll reply to both. I rough everything out in pencils-- basically just blocking out proportions in a very loose way, then I go back in with pen and add all the detail and fine-tune proportions and values. Since I only work on site from observation, a drawing like this takes in the neighborhood of 200 hours. Of course, those 200 hours spanned 3 months, because I have a full-time job and did a lot of other drawings at the same time. I've done a similar project where I drew every building in downtown Bozeman, Montana, but it wasn't on one long sheet like this. I hope to do more and share 'em!
