How similar are Columbus and Indianapolis? - Page 3

I've actually been to Indy for some sports tourism for the NFL draft several years ago. Great setup around the convention center and downtown mall. Don't really remember much else due to the rampant alcohol consumption.

I'll just say (and I tend to avoid these types of threads these days) as a former resident of Columbus and currently only living 1.5 hours from Indy (meaning, I visit it a lot), I'll keep it simple: Columbus is a neighborhood-focused city; Indianapolis is a downtown-focused city. Columbus' downtown and Indy's neighborhoods are improving but that's generally the facts of it.

Regarding Austin, aside from being a state capital with a university, I don't see a general comparison to either Columbus or Indianapolis. It reminds me more of Nashville (the hills, southern hipster, live music street, downtown-focused city with minimal commercial districts outside of downtown, below-average walkable residential neighborhoods, etc). Columbus is basically an old brick city that got lucky with annexation; Indianapolis is more "standard" Midwestern (more wood-frame) with decent walkability in Center Township. Austin and Nashville are improving neighborhood walkability but aren't quite there yet.

Strictly speaking residential neighborhoods, it reminds me of Kansas City without the loads of grand apartments.

Neither are river cities, in that their rivers are not navigable for ship/barge traffic. Very different than most Rust Belt cities which grew up around a river or lake port.

Ohio's statehouse is absolutely better. I honestly don't know why you think it's so horrible.

Ohio's statehouse is somewhat boring because it's so old. Greek Revival isn't really exciting, and it wasn't until post-Civil War that capitol buildings started to be built in the more Neoclassical style, like what you'll find in Indiana or Michigan. Plus, Ohio really was still very much the "frontier" at the time of construction of the Statehouse, so it naturally wasn't going to end up as elaborate as the ones in more-developed states.
