A Southwestern U.S. figure-8

So it’s been awhile. We took a road trip this summer and made a figure-8 through Arizona, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and back through Arizona and Nevada. Spent most of our time in Santa Fe, which I will post as its own thread (deservedly so). Just some shots roaming the quiet countryside that I figured might be interesting…

I’m not a huge fan of the California desert, never have been despite being born out there…

Arizona on the other hand…

A state filled with goofy architectural things in the middle of nowhere…

Kingman has two parts, an interesting older part with territorial-esque buildings and roadside kitsch, and a newer blah suburbia part. Guess which side this is?

Nice…

Where is Applebee’s?

Hosers…

Onward east, we find that dinosaurs still roam…

Wilma or Betty?

The San Francisco Peaks loom large over Northern Arizona…

Especially once you get near Flagstaff…

Choose your direction quickly…

mmmm…beer…

Crossing the Little Colorado (wish I had a better picture)…

Off into the beautiful…

Painted…

Erosion magic…

Open skies…

Pink…

Cool hideout…

Guardians of the monuments…

Natural sphinx…

Pinnacle…

Southern Utah is amazing…

Nature's Skyline…

Tower…

Utah’s flag is boring…

Orange…

Orange you glad I didn’t say banana?

Cliffside perch…

Impressive…

If it were a Yield sign it would be perfect…

“I just felt like runnnning.”

How is this natural?

Totally indescribable…

The Urban Sombrero…

Ironically in front of a bunch of colorless rocks…

Like this flag…

Landmark…

Altar of geography…

Durango, Colorado…

An amazing place to stay…

Presence…

Stone over wood. Odd, but done really well…

Nice…

Choo Choo…

All the right elements…

Chimney…

Rehab potential…

Beautiful…

Red or Green?

In the clouds…

Clean…

Interesting little town…

O’Keefe hangout…

Reservoir…

The road just travelled…

Santa Fe sunrise…

Wake up!

Shades of beige…

Old Capitol Building…

In the light…

Castle…

Where are his antlers?

The day has begun…

Homogeneity…

Love it…

Unexpected…

Run…

Sun…

mmmm…Corten…

Great little building…

Cathedral…

Tricky…

Palace…

Need a trinket?

Great space…

Desert Venetian?

Ass…

Artisan…

Pleasant…

Nice try…

Hollyhock…

Big G incredible…

Damn nice movie theater…

Interesting hats…

Lovely but expensive…

What’s missing here?

Delicious…

Cake decoration…

Moving…

More interesting than expected…

60’s take on a dome…

Random…

Landmark…

Represent…

Modes…

Fire in the sky…

Epic…

What you think all of it will look like…

Festive…

Views from up there aren’t terribly interesting…

The sky enthralls…

Mechanical screen…

Santa Fe…

Blue hour…

Where’s the Aztek?

Searching for Heisenberg…

Clever…

Tickets please…

Good streetscape…

Neon…

The way…

I love terra cotta…

We found him!

Tucson with more trees…

Because you have to…

Entering our 6th state on this expedition…

Oh fuck yes…

Unusual…

An old boss designed this parking garage in the 80’s with DWL. Love how it digs into the mountain…

Half-Mead…

Juxtapose…

730ft tall slide…

You’re so money…

Showing its age…

Lots of opportunity…

Such an odd city…

Blocks out the sky…

Hodgepodge…

Downtown…

As an architect, horrifying and fascinating at the same time…

Such lovely traffic back to Southern California on a Sunday…especially in the rain…

Nice to return…

Nice pictures! I remember those places in northern Arizona. Your pictures are a little better than mine.

So that famous part of Monument Valley is in Utah? ("Orange...") I was under the impression it was in Arizona. That's one of the places on my bucket list.

Nice, can't beat the unique scenery in the west! Scary to see how low Mead has gotten.

Fun stuff

That damn Flintstones park up in Valle has been for sale forever. I haven't the slightest idea why nobody wants to buy an RV park frequented by Grand Canyon and Williams-area meth heads...

So nice I wanted to respond twice. I liked the pictures and wanted to see them again. The northern Arizona pictures remind me of my trip last year.

Where in California were you born? That desert might be bland to you, but it's interesting to me.

Kingman is on my list of places to see. I only saw the suburbia and truck stop area. By the way, my brother was in Nevada, Arizona, and Utah last month to sightsee, and I knew about the cheap gas in Kingman. I told him about that Canada Mart. Gas was $2.66 there when he was there, so I'm guessing you were there in late July or so.

I'd like to hear more about Monument Valley. That's on the short version of my bucket list.

I don't know if I could live there, but I love the desert. It's such a novelty for an Floridian like me. I really need to spend them time to get out and see the rest of Southern Utah. I've been to Zion 3 times already, but never make it further.

Thanks for the comments all. I haven't done a photo thread in over 2 years. I don't have much time to edit these days, though I still do get out shooting occasionally (have about 6-7 worthy threads to get to at some point).

Monument Valley was interesting. It was the first time I had been there since I was about 11. The park itself is both in Arizona and Utah and you can see it from every direction. We went to the actual park because my wife is pregnant and we had our 4yr old with us. So mostly nature from the car. Driving north from there you cannot go wrong for scenery. I got almost no pictures of Mexican Hat or Bluff, Utah, but I really wish I had (wife and child sleeping and needed to get to Durango before too late). The San Juan River canyons are epic looking.

For reference, I was born in a lovely little place called the Antelope Valley in California. Quite the shithole in 1976 and it has not improved. I love the desert, but the Arizona desert is simply so much prettier. Crossing the Colorado River for me is like walking over a threshold.

I had been through Kingman dozens of times before and had never bothered to go look at the downtown area. I'm very happy that I did. The eastern roadside suburbia side of town is depressing though.

The other part of this trip that I really enjoyed driving was from Durango to Santa Fe. A few different ways you can go, but we chose a good one and got great clouds and light the whole way.
