The Hat. I get the impression a fence was added and a piece of equipment got rented and dumped on site as a placeholder til warmer times.

No one's digging in this weather. If the economy was booming, maybe they would hoard and heat the ground and dig, but not now.

Not to be a jerk, but here is a picture of excavation going on just down the street at the ALT Hotel site from this afternoon:

That's good to hear. I was by the site on Sunday and saw that they had removed the drill.

There's also an Expression of Interest closing next week for development partners to work with the CBE on the Booth centre site (in the background there).

Calls for about 100,000 sq ft of institutional space for an interesting adult ed and other programs with a residential tower (about 20 floors) above.

Should be a cool project.

Is that the one we saw a preliminary rendering for, about one year ago?

Can someone remind me what is supposed to be built on the old gas station site? Is that supposed to be N3 phase 2?

Disappointed that gas station is gone. Hopefully it's not just a clone of N3 that gets built in its' place.

No definitive plans for long-term use - however, in the short term you may see that space programmed with a unique use. Details will emerge soon, I'm sure.

Won't it take some time to remediate the lot? I assume that over the long period of time that gas station was operational, there would have been significant leakage from the underground tanks, etc. With the CMLC behind it, I assume this will be taken care of quicker than most. I've seen a number of decommissioned gas stations sitting idle for a very long time before they are cleaned up and re-purposed.

This one comes to mind, with a NIMBY-opposed redevelopment finally coming down the pipe I think a decade after the gas station was ripped out. It was fenced off for half of that time:

Apparently the environmental contamination is actually (and probably surprisingly) minimal.

Yes, I hear that the oil tanks were replaced with newer ones a while ago and remediation shouldn't be that bad. For now, they will do things like a potential pop-up market this summer over that site until a developer comes up with a reasonable plan for that site.

Haha I was trying to be more subtle with immediate plans - but cat is out of the bag. That's correct!

I guess some history was list with that gas station coming down - it was the last gas station in the core. If I was in the area and needed fuel, I would stop there - they'd fill your tank and the inside of the station was a bit odd and maybe even eclectic. Certainly the owners could have developed something quite neat with station but the writing had been on the wall for a long time. Quirky gas stations are becoming more difficult to find and this is another one of them gone.
