Proposed park on the corner of Albert and Lyon, to be developed by Main+Main as part of their 400 Albert project and handed over to the City.

The local Councillor wants to see more such parkettes as part of larger developments.

A much needed reno. Phil's new look will also have the added benefit of the imposing presence of a new 200m tower on its west flank. Perfect.

Impressive concepts/ideas from the City of Edmonton to enhance the central core of the river valley and make it and the river more accessible and connected to people.

“Rebirth of the promenade”
Post-pandemic cities will need more open space. Landscape architects PUBLIC WORK say we can find it by remaking streets – starting with Toronto’s University Avenue.

^ City(re)-making at its best… based on an idea that surface two years ago.

Ongoing work at the William Street pedestrian street. Gateway between Rideau Street and the ByWard Market. Rideau Station east entrance can be seen, with the "O" pylon.

The byward market always seems so car clogged whenever I've been there - which admittingly is only a handful of times. Is there plans to reduce the amount of surface parking in the area, like along York Street?

The City has big plans to reduce parking and the dominance of cars in the Market. The pandemic might have delayed those plans though.

Here's are some presentations on those plans:

It's nice but still a fantasy. They would be taking the only reliable route into downtown and turning it into a sidestreet. University Avenue is also a key emergency vehicle route for downtown and to the TGH and Mount Sinai emergencies ... it's a tough sell, I think, even if it's pretty.

Looks like a nice project, I'm glad they're adding a strong tree canopy to the area. Exploring the area on Streetview the lack of trees there is pretty striking and seems like low hanging fruit to make it much more inviting.

This seems to be a vision pitched by a landscape architect rather than an actual proposal. Which is a good though, IMO - the current University Ave. is more unique and more valuable as being one of this country's few examples of a City Beautiful-era grand boulevards (even if never fully realized) than it would be as a shoehorned park space.

If there were to be any changes to the street, I'd rather see the median expanded and redesigned, rather than being entirely eliminated or reconfigured.

I agree - the symmetry and view corridor of University Ave is completely lost in that visioning exercise. There's a lot that could be done with the space for sure - I'd like to see the temporary bike lanes made permanent along with better hardscaping and a redone median. If the traffic lanes were shoved to one side I'd still rather see a mirrored linear corridor with lines of sight maintained, maybe pedestrian and cycling infrastructure on one side?. That could allow for temporary events and such too.

I don't mind the way University Ave is currently set up with its Park Avenue median, but there needs to be significant changes to the way the median is set up itself.

The monuments are historic and shouldn't be removed or even moved, but the hardscaping and landscaping is looking very haggard and needs a revamp.

I would also take the opportunity to completely redesign the width of the median in some places since there are places that could benefit from having a dedicated left turn lane at certain intersections, which could then allow one of the general purpose lanes in each direction to be converted to a cycle track plus additional sidewalk space.

Right now, left turns are done by hiding in the cove formed by the median, perpendicular to the street itself, and then advancing when it's safe. It reminds me of the setup of those 4-lane rural Prairie highways when you want to turn off and go down a range road that intersects at grade. The difference, of course, is that it works there because the traffic volumes are a magnitude lower and the berth is wider.

The transformation of Sainte-Catherine street is almost complete between De Bleury and Robert-Bourassa. The trafic should be open during the weekend.
